ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A number of teachers from three senior schools on Tortola are the first Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM ) subjects teachers in the Territory to be honoured by Zonta as females in male dominated industries.

On Friday, March 6, 2020, three members of Zonta- Dr Arlene L. Smith-Thompson, Marva Titley-Smith and Dr Nikki Rubaine-Connell- turned up at Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies (VISTS), St Georges Secondary and BVI Seventh-day Adventist School with their signature yellow roses to honour female teachers at the senior school level in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

"We know that STEM is an area where women have been traditionally underrepresented, so we're thrilled to recognise these women who are training the next generation of women in STEM," said Titley-Smith.

Smith-Thompson added that they were even more happy to have chosen to honour teachers as March 8, 2020 marks the commencement of Education Week in the Territory.

Dr Rubaine-Connell said that during this week they plan to honour a number of other women.

Meanwhile, the yellow ribbons around the trees in Road Town, along DeCastro Street, were placed by Zonta in observance on International Women's Day being observed today, Sunday March 8, 2020.
