US fast food franchise would kill local businesses – Cromwell Smith

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), a US fast food franchise if allowed to set up shop in the Virgin Islands would kill local businesses, opined talk show host Cromwell Smith on Thursday, January 5, 2012 on “Umoja”.

He was at the time discussing the appetite for KFC, and the boxes residents bring in when they visit St. Thomas, adding “Some of the franchise we see in North America and Europe we long for, but not realising how it is going to have a negative impact on our families. Those of us who want that need to realize it”.

From time to time, discussions have surfaced for allowing such fast food chains into the Territory. However, Smith is firm in his belief that the VI has its own version of KFC, making reference to Scato’s.

“This is why we are talking about it. We need to realize what damage this way of thinking is going to do to our local businesses that provide jobs, food, clothing and shelter and when you kill off those jobs for one business then we are not better off,” he pointed out.

Heath wise, the talk show host stated that chronic diseases in the VI would skyrocket when residents are lured by the “two piece a chicken, a scoop of mashed potato, and coleslaw for two dollars.”

“Sixty percent of us have chronic disease because of that kind of food,” added Smith.

With the NDP in and they love big business (they remind me of the Republican Party in the USA) anything is possible. One of their big money man Michael T is still pushing to have KFC here! But you all get the government you voted for BAM BAM!!!

And its so true, Jealousy is a B*tch! What does Mr. Micheal T, having money have to do with youuuuuu? Did he borrow it from you? Ask you for it? beg you for it? No - Then stop referencing the man by the fact that he has money. He works for every penny. Are you working for yours? So sick to death and tired of people who look at other people and only think of them in terms of what they have, because they want it too, but dont know how to go about getting it. If you need help with your finances, maybe you should ask Mr. Micheal T, how he does it....dont be jealousssss lol! Address the issue. Further politcs is over, you lost, get over it, move on, acceptance is the first step to curing your problem.

Cromwell, KFC has its audience. I for sure don't like KFC. Bring KFC would give competition in food prices, a place to gather for family time. People should know in what quantity they should eat certain foods. I don't see why we can't have a KFC here. I think we should. After all, its just chicken.

I couldn't agree more. As a newcomer to the BVI, it was refreshing to notice that there was no US-style fast food outlets around. Not only will they kill local business, they encourage bad eating habits, which leads to health problems. The US has very strict regulations that control the quality of the ingredients. Can you imagine the garbage that they would bring here with little or no regulations or the mechanism to police them? Please, BVI, say NO to US fast food!

Yes, it would do nothing for the people of the islands other than capitalize on their expense, and to heavily promote an already-established UN-HEALTHY eating habit. Were we not just recognized as one of the worse in health in Caribbean ? This is a pure attempt at capitalism, and whilst the concept is understandable, in this case, the grass root eating establishments should rise up and protest this type of venture.

KFC is never coming to Tortola so stop making waves when there is no water. A population density of 20,000 is required in a town area not a whole island. GET IT!

Watch Super Size Me or Fast Food Nation and you will know why this "food" that KFC is bad for you, your families, the environment....the list is long. Stay smarter than the other nations....and don't let in those big US corp that sell "image" of family time/easy meal because the long term costs out weigh the short term benefits.

When your children ask about going to KFC and McDonalds, I suggest that you take that opportunity to speak to them about healthy eating, the fact that these fast foods have an enormous level of fat, sodium, sugar and carbohydrate that are way above the daily recommended levels. In addition, I suggest you teach them about the need to have a balance diet and how these fast food restaurants, with their processed food contribute to obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. One meal from McDonalds is over the daily recommended level for, fat, sodium and carbs. You suggest that we give these fast food restaurant a chance. I suggest that you give your children a chance for a healthy life. Go to the following link and see for your self http://www.fastfoodnutrition.org/r-nutrition-facts/McDonalds-item.html

Health wise, the talk show host stated that chronic diseases in the VI would skyrocket when residents are lured by the “two piece a chicken, a scoop of mashed potato, and coleslaw for two dollars.”“Sixty percent of us have chronic disease because of that kind of food,” added Smith. These statement are thought provoking. Nonetheless, Virgin Islanders and residents appear to have an appetite, a hunger for KFC, for twice within the last two months the KFC issue is on the front burner. But I'm somewhat ambivalent about the adverse impact of KFC, as well as other fast food MNCs on Scato, Panchie, and Neito and other small fledgling and emerging businesses. On the one hand, I feel and understand the need for government to protect/shield small, local businesses from external competition. Yet on the other hand, the question is this protective action in a market economy the best course of action for local consumers? The KFC discussion should generate a myriad of other questions. Among these questions are: Is limiting freedom of choice in the best interest of our democracy, the consumers? Can Scato, Panchie, and Neito and others compete, survive and thrive without government protection? Would they be able to carve out a niche/market share in spite of local competition? Could they develop a brand to compete with KFC? Would the quality of service/product improve without competition? Would price be kept fair and reasonable without competition? Does the need of businesses trump the want and desires of consumers? Would competition be unhealthy for these businesses? Would barring competition make these businesses provide better service and better value? Are not Virgin Islanders capable of making responsible personal choices in regards to their health? Assuming the BVI meets the criteria for being awarded a KFC franchise, what value will KFC offer BVI consumers that they will be willing to pay for? Among the value will be convenience (eating out), the brand, the speed of service, price, or the tastiness. Will KFC presence in the BVI be a zero sum game? A zero sum game indicates winners and losers. But both KFC and consumers can win; KFC provides a product that many consumers crave. Further, KFC can provide employment opportunities. Finally, some may argue that fast food is unhealthy. And if this statement is true both local and external fast food would be unhealthy. Moreover, true, government has a responsibility to protect the health and safety of the citizenry. But in this instance, the best course of action in meeting this obligation may be educating citizens on living a healthy life style, not limiting freedom choice on what they eat.

Cromwell just stirring up old stupid talk.No one made application to he government lately to bring in no KFC. He needs some work to do. I do not understand how some of us expect our country to survive without investments. People, that is how countries get stay out of big debts etc. That is how we provide jobs...the government cannot support all of us. KFC, McDonalds, Burger King..I welcome all of them if this will help build our economy.

I love visiting the BVI and I tell you, I would CRY if I came and saw a KFC or any other US fast food joint on the island. The reason so many people come there is because it is UNSPOILED with garbage like that and other big corporate businesses. I would NEVER vacation on St. Thomas. Too much like home. I come to the BVI because it's a world away ... and I'd like it to stay that way.
