LONG BUSH, Tortola, VI- In the aftermath of the ransomware attack on the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC), General Manager Dr Neil M. Smith said the company is back to focusing on providing its service, energy.

In an interview with JTV Channel 55 on November 4, 2024, Dr Smith said the investigations into the ransomware attack on the electricity company on August 15, 2024, will continue with authorities in the United Kingdom (UK).

“There have been investigations at the highest levels even with the National Crime Agency in the United Kingdom,” he revealed.

Cyber-attackers have done it before

Dr Smith also said those responsible for the cyber-attack on the BVIEC are not new as they have done this type of thing in the past.

“We’ve identified what the ransomware was, and it has occurred before so we now have a footprint that could be used to enhance detection methods in the future.”

The authorities in the UK will continue to follow this digital footprint left by the attackers, he assured.

BVIEC moving on

The company now continues to move on from the cyber-attack with systems back online, including the online payment portal which was kept offline while security measures were enhanced.

Dr Smith said, “We’ve submitted whatever evidence we can and that will be taken forward. Our duty now is to make sure that the people in this country have energy and that’s what we concentrate on and protect ourselves in a way that we need to.”

And it is going to take another maybe 15-20 years to run underground lines and have alternative solar power system. This place is indeed a Third World over seas Territory.
