LONG BUSH, Tortola, VI- Customers of the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) can now skip the long lines and resume paying their electricity bills online from today, Monday, November 4, 2024.

The payment portal was down since BVIEC experienced a cyber-attack on August 15, 2024.

“We enabled it this weekend, in order to be ready for today,” General Manager Dr Neil M. Smith told our News Centre this morning.

Ransomware attack

On September 25, 2024, BVIEC said it had recovered most of the systems compromised during the ransomware attack, but the online payment portal had not yet been restored.

It followed up by stating that the payment portal’s restoration was being delayed as a precaution.

“Our forensic experts have determined that there is no clear sign of a breach in online services. However, we encourage customers to remain vigilant and monitor their credit card charges,” BVIEC stated back in September.

@risident the chance of getting hacked is possible/ however by you providing your card into to stranger’s at the airline, strangers at Amazon or any other payment online services doesn’t means you’re safe…

I agree but amazon them never been down for almost 3 months and they have the very basic website security features in place, which bviec didn't have, I'll take my chances with amazon

I will continue to pay online again. The debit card I use has a minimum amount on it for my bills.

Ignorant people, it's just creating tension. The same people who say they will use the system are the first to use it. We are in the 21st century, saving time.

They should include a Paypal option so you don't have to input your card number.
