Opposition must be cautious of terms like ‘No confidence’ in HoA– Hon Vincent O. Wheatley
According to Hon Wheatley, he has always acknowledged that the Opposition has a job to do, "and that is to point out what the government ain't doing, ain't doing right and are doing bad,” he said during the Continuation of the Thirteenth Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth House of Assembly on July 4, 2024.
“And listening to what they're saying, they're doing their job...Our job now… is to point out there are things that are happening, but we must tell that story,” the government legislator stated.
Hon Wheatley noted; however, that in the enthusiasm to point out what is not right, there needs to be caution with what is being put into the atmosphere by the House.
“Because persons are listening around the world and when words like no confidence are said in this House, we don't ever want to have a situation where people feel we are unstable or things are not right.
“We have to be very careful how we bring those particular kinds of words around,” Hon Wheatley added.
Nothing sinister about no-confidence - Hon Walwyn
Meanwhile, Opposition legislator Hon Myron V. Walwyn said the points raised suggested something sinister about a vote of no-confidence as a part of the parliamentary process.
“If people are not pleased with the way in which the government is being operated, the appropriate device is to bring a vote of no confidence. Why are we giving the impression as if to suggest a vote of no confidence will suggest that the country is going to be turned upside down?" Hon Walwyn rebutted.
Hon Wheatley added, “All I'm saying is that we must be very careful in using those words."
The government legislator reiterated the term could suggest there is instability in the VI when it is not the case.
