“Forever Chemicals” also called PFAS, which stands for Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances, is a class of toxic chemicals common in consumer products and manufacturing and found in food, clothes, and homes.
“Forever chemicals are very poisonous and deadly, infact they are saying that they are the most poisonous substance known and its everywhere… blood, ocean, food makeup, clothes,” he added.
The local medicine man said these chemicals are causing heightened sickness on a global scale, especially in the Virgin Islands (VI) where many youths are now being admitted to the hospital. Mr Penn; however, did not produce any data to support his claim.
'We have a problem'
He said local seafood should be tested as a starting point to know the extent of the chemical's presence in the Virgin Islands.
“I believe we have a problem… the local fish live all their life in water. If we find it in our locally caught fish then we have to assume it's in the waters around us,” he added.
Penn said, as a herbalist, he knows the chemicals are impacting the health of the Virgin Islands but not to what extent. “We need to find out at least to what degree we have a problem, not just that we have a problem.”
PFAS are celebrated for their use in nonstick cookware and water-resistant clothing but also feared for their potential toxicity, which has been linked to types of cancer and other harmful effects, according to USA today.
PFAS are almost impossible to avoid and are also found in our homes, offices and supermarkets.
Mr Penn added that the chemicals are also having impacts on newborn babies and was adamant that it is not a matter of opinion, but of the facts that these chemicals are causing sickness and death.
