Tola Radio remains off air; Owner accuses CCT of attacking the business
CCT in October had said it terminated its service agreement with Tola Radio VI 100.5 FM and that it was no longer interested in advertising with the radio station. It said Tola Radio VI could retain the services provided by CCT if it becomes a paying customer.
In October, Mr Burnett told our News Centre the radio “wouldn’t be going off air for one second, one minute”.
CCT didn’t accept Tola Radio’s payment- Burnett
According to a statement from Mr Burnett today, Friday, November 15, 2024, Tola Radio “met all requirements and paid the requested amount” on time, however, was told they payment would not be received.
Mr Burnett also accused the company of physically touching the radio station’s equipment and locking them off despite being asked through legal letters requesting them not to do so.
“They also synonymously tried to have me arrested and charged with [attempted] murder...the public was to wake up and hear the radio off along with hearing I was arrested and charged but God is greater than man!!!” he wrote.
Requests for an extended deadline for relocation was also denied by the company, Mr Burnett revealed.
Mr Burnett added that Tola Radio tried to file an urgent injunction at the High Court, but the visiting judge postponed the matter to November 22, 2024, without reading the request or hearing any arguments.
An attack on Tola Radio
With the station going into another week being off the air, Mr Burnett said the recent developments are an attack on Tola Radio “by some of the richest in the land”.
He said Tola Radio’s eight local employees are now without a source of income and that the business' losses are now in the thousands of dollars and client agreements have been breached.
Burnett also accused most elected government officials of sitting “idly by”, with some not bothering to return requests for urgent calls in this “emergency situation”.
“Like most problems facing the BVI, they can’t [find] no way to help us!! Even though the government is the tower people's biggest client,” he accused.
Public should ‘stand with us’ & ‘we will be back on air’- Mr Burnett
Mr Burnett called on the public and listeners of Tola Radio to “stand with us as we fight for freedom of speech, freedom of press, freedom of information and financial attacks on locally owned businesses by major corporations and clubs!!!”
“I’m asking the BVI public to not support the orange people that have done this unreasonable act to the people’s radio until it’s turned [back] on!!! Plug out the phone, plug out the chip, don’t pay your bill, we need to make a statement to corporate BVI today!!!!!!” he continued.
Mr Burnett also assured listeners and business partners that the radio will be back on air shortly, “hopefully before the day is out”.
