SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI- Horse racing fans disappointed with the postponement of horse races at Ellis Thomas Downs in Sea Cows Bay, Tortola on September 3, 2022, due to inclement weather were looking forward to the new race date of September 18, 2022.

Now comes news that the race card may have to cancelled altogether since a ban has been placed on the use of a portion of land at Ellis Thomas Downs.

“The public is advised effective immediately and until further notice the portion of land at the Ellis Thomas Downs which is owned by Thomas family may not be utilised in any way by the Government, its agents and/or assigns. This includes the Horseowners’ Association, and any person connected thereto,” a notice from Government Information Services (GIS) stated on September 8, 2022.

The parcels of land affected were listed as Parcels 170, 171 and 246, Block 2736B, Sea Cow’s Bay Registration Section.

Upcoming horse races in jeopardy!

“We have taken immediate steps to comply with the directive issued.

“As a result, we have notified the Horseowners’ Association of this important information.  We are aware that races are scheduled to take place at the Ellis Thomas Downs on 18 September 2022. Regrettably, Government is not in a position to say whether the current issues will be resolved prior to that date.”

The press release added that Government has notified President of the VI Horseowners’ Association Mr Lesmore Smith that it may be prudent to take urgent steps to cancel those races in order to mitigate the inconvenience to all relevant stakeholders.

“We want the public to remain assured that Government is committed to working assiduously with the Thomas Family to rectify this situation as soon as possible,” the release concluded.

Gov’t has paid on lease for year- Premier

No information was given as to what exactly the problems are, which have resulted in the ban on the use of the track by the Thomas family.

There were speculations that Government may have owed money on the lease of the land; however, this was debunked by Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) on social media.

“The ministry has paid for the year. This is not the problem. More info will be made available in due time,” Premier Wheatley briefly stated.

‘It is what it is’- Lesmore Smith

Meanwhile, Mr Lesmore Smith communicated to our newsroom that he has received correspondence from government about the use of Ellis Thomas Downs.

“With immediate effect, we can no longer use the track until further notice. Please follow all instructions to avoid and legal proceedings/ procedures against us or the BVI Government. I’m asking for full cooperation in this matter!

“I know it’s much disappointing, but it is what it is,” a correspondence to horse owners by Mr Smith stated.

Our newsroom will continue to work on more details to this story.

Instead of a yearly payment, why doesn't the government try to purchase the land from them? If they don't want to sell, they have every right not to, but some agreement should be made for the owners of the land to be compensated fairly. It is that simple. Now I can understand if the family wants to use the land for themselves to build on too. It is their right. The government would just have to purchase a piece of land that can hold horse racing on the flat.

1.5 Million for what? To mash up horse foot on a track 3 times a year if so much???????

Who in their right mind would pay yearly more than the cost of land.

Common sense isn't a flower that grows in everyone's garden.

We lost iconic Bomba Shack, and now a bedrock of local, and inter-regional entertainment ,Horse Racing. Some peopñe will destroy the whole country with greed and stupidity. BVI like any other destination needs a variety of attractions to bring tourists to the island.. Let them people carry the strip of land to the grave yard with them.

Doesn't Government have a negotiator to step in in these type of issues so the races will go on and they strike a deal with the landowners?? We talking about a national sport here. Come on.

This is so sad. I hope they can resolves these issues as soon as possible.

In case some aren’t aware, this is the only functioning track in the Virgin Islands and USVI. Both tracks in St. Thomas and St. Croix are severely damaged and from what I’ve been reading in the news these won’t be fix anytime soon. If we play our cards right this would be beneficial to us. We could be the host for quarterly races for about three years. This would put money in our treasury as well as upgrade the track. This needs fixing.

Ayo must be fair because the Thomas family give up their land without hesitation.....They could've built buildings on their land like all the other folks {Oneals, Skeltons, Malones} but decided to sacrifice theirs so we all can have fun......Fair is fair.

To take that $1.5M then end the contract after 2 years to go build. That $1.5M could go from Government to the SCHOOLS!!!!!

Lets put our heads together and see where can accommodate a horse track - perhaps Anegada. We go to STT for races. Its the same distance.

Why not use a portion of Paraquita Bay for the track. Isn’t it Crown land? It’s flat, just have to raise it a bit. Just my two cents.
The Thomas’ have become greedy, want all get none.
