Patsy C. Lake changes mind on calling it quits
It was in June of this year at a luncheon to honour horse racing pioneers and stalwarts of the territory that Mrs Lake had said she was not going to seek re-election after her one-year-term was up.
“I would like to say thank you to all who have attended this luncheon, thanks for coming, I look forward to you continuing to come and come again because we got so much more before the year closes off and before I give up my presidency,” announced Mrs Lake at the conclusion at the luncheon to honour a number of horse racing stalwarts on June 19, 2016 at Ellis Thomas Downs.
Following her announcement, persons at the luncheon encouraged her to stay on, saying she was doing a “good job” as president.
“I know that is what you wish me but unfortunately or fortunately it reads 71 and not 17, so you understand what I am saying,” Mrs Lake said.
However, recently while on a radio sports programme aired on ZBVI 780 AM, Mrs Lake said persons have overwhelmingly demanded that she stays on as President as they felt she was the right person to take the sport forward, giving her no choice but to renege on her earlier position.
Mrs Lake also subsequently confirmed this information with Virgin Islands News Online.
Pari-mutuel wagering
She had also stated that one of the things she wants to accomplish as president is for pari-mutuel wagering to be introduced in the territory, something which she believes is necessary for the ‘Sport of Kings’ to further develop locally.
Meanwhile, the next luncheon to honour VI’s horse racing stalwarts will be held on October 30, 2016.
According to Mrs Lake, most of the persons to be honoured will be from the Humtums Ghut area. “It was a village known primarily for horse racing, horses, horse trainers and horse owners,” Mrs Lake told this news site.
