ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Ministry of Financial Services, Economic Development, and Digital Transformation has announced that the increase in the minimum wage for the Virgin Islands (VI) scheduled to take effect from November 30, 2024, has been postponed.

In a bulletin from the government today, December 3, 2024, the postponement is “on account of a matter of policy”.

The new minimum wage was approved by Cabinet in July 2024, which would see an increase of $2.50 per hour.

New date to be announced in 2025

A revised implementation date will be announced in the first quarter of 2025, the bulletin added.

The adjustment to the minimum wage in the VI was said to be part of a comprehensive strategy, which includes regular wage reviews, targeted support for small businesses, and increased investments in workforce development.

We need an increase in price control which is our biggest problem. The former minister refused to address that. Putting a bandaid on an infected sore to protect her ....

A better plan would be to increase the tax free amount so that small businesses won’t have to feel the pinch and so increase the cost of their goods and services.

Was the announcement of the effective date for the minimum wage increase implementation was done without dotting the I’s and crossing the T’s? Was it rushed to show government was doing something? How could such a routine issue end with government with egg on its face, reinforcing the notion that government cannot even do the simple things right? Was this delay an unforced error , disappointing those at the low rungs on the economic ladder who were looking forward to likle pittance? Common on mehson. Fumbling the routine things just feed the narrative that government cannot do anything right?

The labor department needs to step up their game and stop their nonsense. A lot of time road eyes saying that the employers are doing undercover things with some labour people. I don't know if this is true but it needs to stop if it's so. How can an employer pay a new staff more than someone who worked there for years? How can the new staff get to work overtime and the older staff cannot? How can a job be redundant when you rehiring your own country people to fill it? Labour needs to look into all the cleaning companies who hiring and if the have 5 days work for their employees?

So the promised $2 50 minimum wage increase that was approved July 2024, and was surprising to go into effect November 30, 2024, has been cancelled? Please say you are joking. If in fact this a not a Christmas joke, then tell those that hope to expect a small pay hike that the offer was not enough, and if the 1st of January, 2025 an additional $1.50 an hour is guaranteed thus making the new minimum wage $10.00 an hour.

Price for food and essential goods are climbing higher at a fast pace weekly in the BVI. How else are minimum wage workers and others without jobs expect to survive on meager income when 6 or 7 years, even longer at times, no raise?

I road in a vehicle in the mucky, muddy, potholes infested,, hogs-pools looking Hodges Creek dugged up, mashy road area twice De. 3, 2024.. Base on its present condition I think it should rightfully given a new name: Hog's pen Roadway. Don't become upset with me. This is exactly how it looks.
No wonder the biblical scripture tells us in the Book of Proverbs that we should not "labghbor to be rich, cease from your own wisdom, if riches come, set not your heart on it..

please note: Greedy people are very, very sick people, only that the majority of them don't realize how badly sick they are.

Another blow to the have nots. There is no such thing as rich or poor in the BVI, You’re either a HAVE or A HAVE NOT.

Great decision. a 2.5 increase is such a huge jump. If it is to be increases, it should be at most $1. However, we should look at the price for food and rent here. It is too high. but if you don't have the money to pay people, how can businesses exist. No business means no money for rent or food. Stop be greedy.

Comprehensive strategy! The VI? Nation has become a joke. There is no strategy or intelligen thought for anything but filling own pockets. Everything is done in secret. The positive potential of the COI has been turned to dust.
