ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The new minimum wage of $8.50 per hour for the Virgin Islands (VI) will officially come into effect on Saturday, November 30, 2024.

According to a bulletin from the government, “Businesses and employees are encouraged to view this change as a positive step towards promoting shared prosperity for the people of the Virgin Islands”.

Approved by Cabinet in July 2024

The new minimum wage was approved by Cabinet in July 2024, resulting in an increase of $2.50.

The last increase in minimum wage for the VI came into effect on October 1, 2016, when it was increased from $4.00 per hour to $6.00 per hour.

The Minimum Wage Advisory Committee was commissioned by former Deputy Premier and Minister for Financial Services, Labour and Trade Hon Lorna G. Smith, OBE in November 2023. Following extensive stakeholder and public consultations, the draft report of the committee was submitted to the ministry in May 2024.

The then minister said in July that the adjustment is part of a comprehensive strategy, which includes regular wage reviews, targeted support for small businesses, and increased investments in workforce development.

Now its for the Premier to step up and do something to further helped the lower income earners by increasing Ronnie Tax exemption from $10.000 to $15000. For those making under $36.000.00 per year or less than $800.00 per week. ..Oh how nice that would be...I am making $550.00 per week. I am surving check by check, But during tax exemption period I can put a $50.00 aside every pay day..

It's $20 per day it's not $100 per day. It's more than the Hospital workers go for their last pay increase so many, many years ago.

I agree with you 100%. Imagine grocery prices has gone through the roof, electric bill has doubled and they blaming cost of fuel and now the rent has increased by almost $200.
An increase in the tax exemption up to $15K would have been much better. The Grocery will never pass on the savings they get whenever the Government gives them a tax cut or something else. We out here feeling it. May God have mervy on us all. We cannot continue to deal wit a crappy infrastructure, skyrocketing utility bills when water is a scarce commodity and exorbitant grocery prices when most times the foods have reached or nearing their expiry dates, are spoilt or looking good outside whilst rotten to the core. All this calls for us as a people to come together and help eachother, stop being selfish and learn how to work together to make our home a better place. Lets do this. We can do this. May God continue to bless these beautiful Virgin Islands and all who call it home. Peace, love and God's grace to y'all. Love you, guys!!!!

It is still equivalent to 4.00 when you factor in inflation. The system is collapsing and its gonna be very messy. The next round of price increases will more than cancel that increase gas alone will eat it up while everything else continues to spiral upwards.

@ smh. I agree with you, the employers can do better. When the minimum was $6 per hour I paid $8. Now that it is $8.50 I will pay $10 per hour. I only have always paid more when people were looking to do simple yard work around my yard. I don't have my own business I have a regular job but some businesses can afford to pay more to their employees but don't. Sad.

Greedy Bill; disgusting and despicable. Obviously detached from reality considering how much representatives earn to sit in a circle 16 times a year. Do the math it ain't $8.50 an hour, more like 664 dollars per hour. Wake up people, we are being subjected to a lifetime of poverty by rich fat wolves in sheep's clothes. They even demand duty.... on your food!!!!
