HODGE'S CREEK, Tortola, VI- Acting Premier and Minister for Communications and Works Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) has called on residents to use the roadways with care and caution, following an accident at Hodge's Creek on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.

At least one person is reported to have sustained injuries in the vehicular accident that occurred sometime before 8:00 PM.

Safety must be top priority- Hon Rymer

Hon Rymer, in his statement, confirmed that the car was speeding when it ran off the road where road workers were about to engage in casting work, crashing near them and “narrowly missing them”.

Calling the vehicular accident unfortunate, Hon Rymer said it “underscores the critical importance of safe driving practices, particularly in areas where construction and maintenance activities are ongoing”.

The safety of the community he added, must remain the top priority.

“I urge all motorists to exercise caution, adhere to speed limits, and remain vigilant to ensure the safety of our road workers and fellow road users,” he continued.

Hon Rymer encouraged motorists to commit to responsible driving as a means of preventing incidents such as these from occurring in the future.

Grateful for road workers- Hon Rymer

Hon Rymer also extended his gratitude to the workers, as vital road improvement projects continue across the Territory.

“[They] labour tirelessly—often in challenging conditions—to enhance our infrastructure,” he said.

The Communications and Works Minister also said he is thankful no lives were lost as a result of Tuesday’s accident, commending the road workers’ commitment to safety.

Hon Rymer extended wishes of a swift recovery for the injured, as well as appreciation to the police and emergency services for their prompt response.

@ 2024. I drive by Hodges Creek daily. I leave my house 15 minutes early because I know how slow traffic has to move. I see impatient drivers probably running late, trying to dodge in and out of traffic all the time. This person who ran off the road was a hothead speeding in a location where you cannot speed. It was his fault because we were all taking our well good time. Drivers have to use common sense by leaving their houses a little early by 15 to 20 minutes to be on time for their destinations.

Let us all be responsible. Every driver is responsible for controlling the vehicle they drive. If you speed there are consequences, whether the road is good or whether the road is in disrepair. The good or bad road does not turn over a vehicle, it is the result of the controller. The road need fixing and even a fowl on the road know it is bad. Let us take our time and stop casting blame everywhere except where it should go.

Wishing the injured person a speedy recovery and thankful that his/her life was spared

If this was caused by poor roads and the person dies there is a case for cooperate manslaughter. The government has shown that they are not interested in maintaining the roads and they are poorly designed. This is a classic case where people have shown that they are contempt for the people using the roads.

The drivers skills here are very very poor. Ayo talk about 'island time mon' but put some of these fools in a car and they think they are racing the Indy 500, but without the skills or license for that matter. So many selfish drivers on this island who do not care if they injure someone.
