ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Virgin Islands welcomed 60 new individuals as registered British citizens during a ceremony held at Government House on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.

During the ceremony, Governor of the Virgin Islands Daniel Pruce congratulated the new British citizens, stating, “I congratulate you on having persevered with the process, and for having demonstrated your allegiance to the United Kingdom as well as to the Virgin Islands. The British Citizen’s passport, to which you will now be entitled, enables you to enjoy rights of residence and employment in the United Kingdom. This opens up new opportunities for study and professional development, which I hope you will grasp.”

Call for new citizens to be supportive

The Governor also reminded the new citizens that their citizenship carries new moral and legal responsibilities. He also encouraged them to remain supportive of persons who are new to the Territory.

“I ask you in particular to be always supportive of others who are newcomers to this Territory, just as you are now newcomers as British citizens. As the Good Book reminds us, "You shall love the stranger, for you were once strangers in the land.”

New chapter

Registrar General Mrs Tashi O’Flaherty-Maduro said citizenship carries rights and privileges, but it also reflects commitment to shared values, civic responsibility, respect for others, and active participation in community life.

She added, “To those being registered today, this ceremony marks the beginning of a new chapter. It recognises your individual journeys, each one unique and shaped by perseverance, hope, dedication, and aspirations for the future.  Whether your path began here or led you here through life’s many experiences, today affirms your place within the British family and the enduring values of respect, democracy, service, and mutual responsibility.”

I live here 24 years and I have nothing. My child is aUSA citizen by birth. As soon as he turn 18 he will file for me, then I will leave this.

That's great. So how many British people living here for years have been made Virgin islanders, or is this just one sided?

How much more they want from us? The least they can do for the free labour and wealth drained from the strong backs of our ancestors.

How many years of tolerating all the BVI nonsense? 20 + and that if they like you or you have money.

Yes many new arrivals are treated terribly.

It starts with the abuse from Immigration and Customs workers and the same bad attitude flows to DMV who can’t even print licences anymore. Auntie must be on strike.

    Will it ever improve

Was wondering do we have a yearly maximum? We do have limited land space and everybody who comes, majority stays and applies. Are we going to be overrun soon (already is), but landlocked soon?

Is this an entitlement or a privilege?

Karnage, you are so right. It is a privilege, but everyone that applies seems to believe they are entitled. What kind of country is this? The applications come in and are processed like they are here 20 years so entitled. What other country does that? What size is our country? Where the hell are we going to put everybody? Please, God, help us. We are drowning in people.
