ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Declaring that the people of the [British] Virgin Islands have become an arrogant people, high-minded and self-serving, with a form of Godliness but denying the power thereof, outspoken clergyman Bishop John I. Cline has blasted the current state of affairs of the Festival Village, including the type of artistes being invited to perform.

According to Mr Cline, the Festival Village must be taken back, and he sent a stern warning to Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) to ensure this.

“We invite gun-wielding, drug-promoting, gangster-like characters to be featured as guest artistes on our Emancipation stage, on our emancipation village. The colonisers are not doing that to us, we are doing that to ourselves. Lest we forget,” Bishop Cline stated during his ‘Emancipation Sermon’ at the Emancipation Service hosted by the Virgin Islands Heritage Month Committee at the Sunday Morning Well on Sunday, August 6, 2023.

Bishop Cline highlighted that Government has injected some $1M into the Emancipation celebrations; however, there is much to be desired.

It’s ‘Emancipation Village not a bacchanal’- Bishop Cline

The man of the cloth said the festival village should have pictures of “our heroes” so that the people can be educated about their history.

“And then where are our children? What do we teach them? Coney Island? For real? And making it free? Like that is something really good? We need to teach them their history.

“In that same village is emancipation village not a bacchanal,” Bishop Cline stated.

It was then Bishop Cline said the emancipation village needs to be returned to a respectable standard.

“We need to take back our emancipation village. And you know I could start a riot if I wanted to, so I am sending you [Premier] a good warning. Don’t let us shut you down, because we know where the breaker box is.”

Bishop Cline also asked what happened to the schools putting on skits about emancipation and noted there should also be candlelight vigils.

“Is that not a place where we should come together as families, with thanksgiving to pay homage to this memorial, and our ancestors and give thanks to the God of our salvation? We should never forget their sacrifice,” Bishop Cline implored.

Among those in attendance at the service held under the theme 'Stronger Together' were Premier Wheatley, Governor John J. Rankin, CMG, Junior Minister for Culture and Tourism Hon Luce D. Hodge-Smith (R4), Junior Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Dr the Hon Karl Dawson (R1), and Second District Representative Hon Melvin M. Turnbull.

The Emancipation Service was preceded by a Freedom March that started opposite Government House and ended at the Sunday Morning Well.

Governor Rankin also participated in the Freedom March.

I think the issue is to far gone because we waited till the horse dem out the stable; trying to close the door now is an uphill battle

nothing against the administration but spending money in certain areas of our economy just for popularity is utter nonsense: 250 thousand for an eight hour event along side one million dollars on other entertainment

look around our country and one could conclude there are more important factors than entertainment: very bad roads; unstable electricity: continuous issues with water: people working and not being paid BUT throwing good tax money down the drain

nothing against entertainment or the government

The spending of the 250 is being blown out of context for political reasons. Talk about the Governor & UK ongoing attempt to try to enslave us and try to make us think they are perfect and our only hope for a brighter future.

Oh please. How many different things the same 250k could have go to do? A country has to balance its spending on all fronts as all mouths must be feed. You are so narrow minded. Look at the spin off from $1mill festival and the 250k concert that was spent. Look at the thousands of persons who came to the island to enjoy festival including some of the same international and local artists and the money made by private and commercial companies of both. Look at how all the hotel rooms and guest houses and others were all rented out for a week and more. Look at how full all the boats and planes were coming and going with people for festival. Look at the increase in head tax collected as a result. Look at how much money made by the many restaurants and small man on the side food stands all over the island and those in the village. Look at how much more money taxi men made. The domino effect to the economy directly and indirectly is endless as I could have name much more benefits from the same 250k concert and the 1mill for festival. This is why I can say you, John, and a few others are narrow minded and want things play out only how you all see it and want it but life is about balance. I do agree the vulgarity has to cut out but that isn't a government issue.

UK don't have to enslave a soul, because our dealers not leaders have coconut head, brown outside but white inside, that's to say they will act worst than their colonial counter part. Stifle the media victimized next to whipping, and do neocolonial projects like dance and party to keep you stupid and flamboyant in your conspicuous consumption of rubbish instead of owning your lands , the rich buy up all the outer small island you just there partying gyrating.

The folly of thier ways. This man thinks nothing of leaders who he doesn't endorse and always take the opportunity to go public to attack them but leave the real culprits go free. This is the same man who has gone Guyana to invest where the behavior for these event are the same or worse but it is OK for him there as he is just about the profit but a problem for him here where it is about destroying others to build up himself and friend and family for power to get more profits. I do agree with some of the concerns he raised but he is taking the rest too far.

Some times we talk about constitution, but lawdee it's not our own, it's a document the white man give we, in all countries that was colonized can't you see that through that document the project themselves into our future. And even if we write our own constitution, we use a democratic Westminster parliament system which use to represent rich planters, so that won't work for us, it should be more socialist because indeed that's what we practice when you see government employ the most people and give out grants, didn't you say yashuwah feed the people with 1 fish? That's socialism. Real free people fight and create their own. When America got free they created there own spelling too, different than the British.

There is something in each part of festival celebrations for everyone whether it be Gospel Fest, Carrot Bay with some of the same things John is speaking about or Road Town. Why is everything about always blaming the government for some of these hypocrites.

John is continuously talking about any government he does not support but the one he supported spent $8million on a plane that never came, never fly, and our $8mill tax money is gone forever. He and the Governor and their friends never continuously speak about this nor intend to do anything about it because of the UK high level people and Loccal friends involved Talk about double standards in people.

The gun wielding artist are exactly what that are,”ARTIST!” You have not heard an artist kill another man, rob another man, fight another man. They just sing what the same public is doing and the thousands who come out to see them know this reality and like their artistry.

Bishop Clown preaching bout being holy and he is not the perfect example of being holy. Non of them are good examples of walking in the Holy Spirit shoes. They are all with their flaws.

Let the people enjoy what their tax paying dollars paid for. At least they get some sort of entertainment from their tax paying dollars and STILL they have to pay. I would rather pay for this than to put any in a plate for the fake pastors and preachers who manipulate the Bible for their lives own Benifit.

This raises a red flag in any organization. Could it be this is the reason it is not growing? JOHN needs to look within as well as well outside.

If they do not do it then they always go public and try to destroy what other who are not in their circle is doing positive for the BVI.

Since everything with festival that has been going on for years is suddenly a problem to him, Mel, Eileene and a few other loud mouths then have them tell the BVI public how much of the million dollars went towards the Gospel fest, the Sunday Morning Well emancipation Service, Carrot Bay, Road Town and so on. Give the break down so the people can see the true picture and not the one these people are intentionally trying to paint.

The UK spent millions of pounds to install a new king. Then they spent million of pounds to celebrate his birthday. All this while poverty, crime, corruption, socially ills, continue to rise due to lack of funding. I say this to let the people of the BVI to know the Governor and them are not squeaky clean good role models of good governance as they are trying to portray and force on the people of the BVI their twisted version of good governace which is really their control tactic. This speaker at this event in the story needs to educate his people about these facts as well as the common individual here in the UK is catching hell because of extremely poor decisions, poor public service, and poor governance. BVI enjoy your emancipation.

We have leaders who are in love with power and not in love with leadership. I saw Hon. Wheatley at the torchlight ceremony and thought that would have been a great demonstration of leader by other elected officials to honour a respectful tradition to our Virgin Islands emancipation heritage. Who will lead the charge in demonstrating to the next generation what is good and worthy of their involvement in carrying on culture. Culture cannot only be thought of as our food. The elders and culture keepers are dying out and soon there will be no Virgin Islands culture because everyone demands that we embrace all the cultures that have made the VI their residence.

Too late has been the cry; too bad for those longing for days past in the VI.

The BVI is the only country who I see sitting on their a$@ blaming government for everything and waiting on them to do everything. Culture is everyone's business so no one has to wait on government to strengthen our cultural heritage. Let us just stop the new age of politics of ungratefulness and complaining for everything all day all week all month all year.

You missed the mark. I stated that I saw the premier, but not many others at the torchlight procession, which is symbolic of not needing too overspend on extravagance to uphold important culturally significant practices. Persons voted for leaders who congregate to hate and used gossip and complaints to inspire political change in leadership. Unity of our leaders and people has to be demonstrated in ways that will build the people and territory culturally, spiritually and socially, so that eventually we can re-establish a strong foundation. We get so aroused by political campaigns, but neglect the idea that supporting smaller cultural, social, environmental and educational campaigns are equally or more important.

@Too, Late, elected members can choose what events they want to skip. But as a representative of the VI whether At Large or District, there are a few must attend events, ie, freedom march, torch light procession, etc. Elected members cannot represent the people at their personal convenience.

Marcus Garvey: “A people without knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots..” The BVI is like a ship that is off course, rudderless. The BVI people, education system, government, generation after generation, etc, have failed miserably, failing to educate generations of Virgin Islanders on the exploitation, expropriation, dehumanization, brutality , violence, rape, murder, etc, of the slave trade, slavery and colonialism. Moreover, slave labor also built the UK and other European economies, rescuing Europe from economic depression, disease, poverty, feudalism, etc in the 1500. Slave labour also source funded the creation of thev real estate, insurance, finance, banking, transportation, communications, insurance, shipping, education and training institutions, medical, etc, institutions. The chickens have come home to roast on the indifference in regards to history, heritage, customs, culture, etc. Generations of Virgin Islanders are ignorant on the true meaning and purpose of the august Emancipation Festival celebration. Many don’t know that on August 01, 1834, our forebears after over 300 years of slavery was turn loose homeless, penniless, unemployed, illiterate, barefooted, hungry,,with just the rags on their backs.

In the succeeding years, our forebears struggle, sacrifice, etc, to bring the BVI from a likle sleepy hollow, poor house of the West Indies , bird sanctuary ,,etc., to today being able to boast having one of the highest standard of living, quality of life and per capita income.. Nevertheless, the BVI is facing some strong social, economic and political head winds and needs strong leadership to get it back on a sustainable and resilient course.. The new leadership team must lead the territory towards a new direction, after critical analysis of the social, economic, and political condition, developing a plan with strategies to take the territory to a better place.

The Festival Committee needs a new direction;it needs a stable team to run it. It is needs a new vision and mission with a focus on the true meaning on culture, etc.,The frequent rotation of the leadership team is costly. “The committee needs direction and stability.,The BVI is one of the few places where locals divorce themselves from Culture and wed to other culture(s). The Emancipation Celebration needs to revamp, putting the purpose, pride back in the celebrations. It is not a bacchanal/carnival; it is a festival. This august event around the first of August must be reserved for Emancipation Festival celebration. Further, there must be a renaissance of BVI culture. Every other country is proud of their culture. BVI can selectively integrate as necessary other culture into own,not replace its own.

@Sambo, you are talking in a Trojan horse manner. You are not talking like a Sambo; guess it is just a name. You are laying it on thick and talking truth in this blog. It is deep. Some have accuse you of being a racist but it seems you call a spade a space some of your commentary may sting and make some people uncomfortable, especially those who that the truth about slavery and colonialism is buried and vast in the dung heap. As I said you no Sambo. If anyone you are more an Uncle Tom as in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

Leadership is different…

John has a few good points but most don't make sense. He is correct we have to protect & build upon our culture but this involves all of us & not just government. He is correct the meaning of emancipation celebration must not be loss but again that's up to all as government can only provide the funding. I agree the vulgarity must stop but again this will take all of us as a people to do better. All of them need to come off of the 250k concert and 1mill for festival as they seeved the purpose especially with so many suffering since Irma then Covid. Let the taxi people make money. Let the ferry boat people make money. Let the private water ferry people make money. Let the vendors make money. Let the stores make money. Let the food places make money. Let the fishermen make money. Let the commercial and private planes make money. Let the hotels make money. Let the guess houses make money. Let the supermarket and wholesale places make money. Let the car rentals make money. Let the treasury make money on head tax & others. To make money, you have to spend money. More businesses and people of the BVI made major money from the government spending the 250k on the concert and million dollars on the festival and this is a FACT. It boost the economy in a multiplicity of ways. Let us all stop playing politics and look at all sides as there are more positive than negatives with the spending of our tax monies in these two areas that are unfairly being criticized.

All churches need to give back the congregations reparations for taking their money through lies and deceit.

When are you silly people going to learn to read beyond headlines and take statements in their entire context? News Sites take excerpts of what people say, which usually do not represent their overall message. To get the overall message you will have to watch the interviews, sermons, press conferences etc for yourself. But I doubt most of you have the attention span for that.

The festival in BVI is the worse in the entire Caribbean 100% with the same thing every yr like a 12in ruler no changes to save a life the festival need promotion at an international level to encourage more Caribbean ppl to come and enjoy
Separate the children from the adults have two different communities and focus on getting a festival of some class with ppl to enjoy this half mile thing is so silly and all the big trucks playing music so close you can't understand bull shit from none spread out the judging from so close each other and keep the trucks going these 20 to 50 ppl bands them need sponsors and DJ to play music from all over the Caribbean because BVI can't and don't produce the amount of music Soca to fully entertain the ppl
Get a committee that have some new ideas and have a two week village opening with a DJ clash east vs west vs town and then a finals night school children and teens soca event and other activities that can attract ppl

So this guy is threatening violence since he doesn’t like the lineup.

I don’t think scripture condones threatening violence to get your way.

He must not have read the bible.

Putting aside our differences we can surely see that Cline is right. I don’t think any of our grandparents wanted us to dishonor ourselves on the streets paved with their blood and sweat. It’s not only the half naked women and young girls, it’s also the wukking up and grinding down to the ground aka dancing. Festival is a family oriented activity, people shouldn’t have to cover their children eyes from watching a “parade”! Those of us that continue to think it’s ok for us to continue behaving like this really need to rethink the reasons for the emancipation celebration. It is a disrespectful way for us to continue to honor the memory of people who suffered and died so we can have this opportunity. Yes times are changing and we do need to make some changes to our celebrations, but we definitely do not need more nakedness and lewd conduct, these can be saved for our bedroom. And those of us bashing Christians for speaking against it must stop. GOD is not pleased with us, Irma was a warning. We need to get back on track to a festival of quality and meaning. Asking people to cover up and act respectfully CANNOT kill the fun of festival, only a small minded person would see it that way.
