BEEF ISLAND, VI - With almost 400 monthly flights, the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (EIS) which is the gateway to the [British] Virgin Islands, is now the second busiest airport for flights from Puerto Rico.

According to March 3, 2024, stats shared by Simply Flying, a leading independent voice for aviation news and insight, Beef Island, just off the main island of Tortola, the airport is linked to San Juan by three carriers.

Cape Air operates up to nine daily links between the two airports, located 96 miles apart. Despite the number of frequencies, the airline transports the least number of passengers on the route due to the 9-seat capacity of its Cessna 402s.

With three daily flights (two on Tuesdays), interCaribbean Airways is the second-busiest carrier on the route. Flights are operated by a mix of the airline's ATR-42s and Embraer E190s.

Silver Airways follows close behind with 86 departures this month using a mix of ATR 42s and 72s.

Increased tourism in VI

The flight stats coincide with the VI’s tourism expansion plan under Premier Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) for both business and leisure travelers to increase their visits to the VI.

The stats do not include new direct service between Miami and the Virgin Islands (VI) via American Airlines (AA) and its double flight.

AA launched its historical daily direct flight service between the VI and Miami on June 1, 2023, which resulted in high demands, leading the airline schedule five additional flights for the month of June even before its inaugural flight took place.

That's because most other caribbean countries have direct flights and don't need to connect through Puerto Rico.

WHAT £$^%&*!!!!!! Cape Air takes a whopping 90 ppl a day at peak...One jet from anywhere else eclipses that. Stop feeding people bulls*** and let us develop our airlift capabilities ASAP!

How InterCaribbean feels about cancelling a flight last Thursday from PR to EIS and didn’t notify passengers? No agent was present at the counter in PR. That’s a high level of incompetence. Passengers had to purchase tickets from another carrier. If InterCaribbean doesn’t get serious soon, they will end up at the bottom of the table.

And still beef island airport is the worst in the world.

    - no screens with information on arrivals and departures
    - drunk and rude taxi drivers
    - incompetent and slow immigration

Silver only offer afternoon flights, i guess, because of the cost to have sleep over plane and crew.
But cape air can do better and invest in 30 seater planes to move three times as much passenger in one flight. with a 8:30 plight and a 11: 00 clock flight in the morning Cape air could be moving up to 70 passengers before Silver got their first out of the island. I guess by keeping seat availability down price can be kept artificially high for larger profits.

The tourist Board is working doing their at most best. The problem with our tourism leaders and organization, they all want to be it, the big boss Dog..No effort whatsoever in coming together to create a standard, a high operational standard across the board, across all Islands with consequence for failure...So, This is where I say, the Premier do not have a good or tight grip on whats going on, or to insist what needs to go on, goes on..Had a talk with a Tourist Board Member 'A big one' who explained in Frustration that trying to get all the tourism entity together for a sit down is like pulling a wisdom tooth without the application of anesthetic. Keep trying, don't give up. Lazer with the Premier and make it happen..The Premier seems like he is afraid of certain people...Stay with it. We can do better.

What does second busiest route really mean? Second busiest compared with whom? Is this rating based on the number of arrival and departures in Puerto Rico? How does the fares from and to Puerto Rico from the BVI compared to the #1 route and others. I read somewhere that though the BVI was the second busiest but shortest route, the fares were among the highest. What is being done, if anything, to lower prices? Puerto Rico was once the Hub and Spoke for the Caribbean for American Airlihe and American Eagle. That hub was moved to Miami. Puerto Rico seems to have some of its trade with the rest of the region.
