VI’s Kleon Penn joins Minnesota Timberwolves training camp
"The assistant manager saw me and invited me to practice. Simple as it was," Penn, the three-time Defensive Player of the Year in the National Superior Basketball (BSN), stated.
Penn said he was on national team duty for the CBC Championships earlier this year at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex in Road Town, Tortola, when he was approached by the assistant manager of the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Penn has previously said he always wanted to have the opportunity to play in the NBA and would utilise the opportunity if called.
"For now I'm just in training camp. I'm just happy to have the opportunity," he said.
Penn’s involvement with the Minnesota Timberwolves training camp was also announced by his agent Jose Paris, who noted that the Bayamon Cowboys player was invited to the 'tryouts' by the new leader of the Timberwolves, Sam Mitchell, who will occupy the space of Flip Saunders for a health condition. Saunders is battling with cancer and left his position in the organisation.
In the roster, Minnesota has three pivots: Nikola Pekovic, Gorgui Deng and the first selected in the past amateur draft in the NBA, the Dominican Karl Towns.
Penn has played six seasons in the BSN. He won the defensive player of the year in 2011, 2013 and 2014.
Standing 7’0, the 29-year-old Penn is a centre with strong defensive qualities. In the last tournament of BSN he finished second in blocks with 88 for an average of 2.2 per game and also accumulated averages of 4.8 points and 6.1 rebounds with the Cowboys.
