UPDATE: Sargeant-Winter remembered for strength & humour
The former Festival Queen (now referred to as Miss BVI) and Miss Universe 1967 contestant died at a Puerto Rico Hospital on April 21, 2013.
She was 63 years of age at the time of her death.
She will be interred at the St George’s Episcopal (Anglican) Church Graveyard following the service.
The former pageant queen was fondly remembered for her unique personality, strength, sense of humour and determination. Her special friend, Kather Smith, recalled that she was always ‘positive and full of life’. It was a shared memory by many who offered tributes.
According to another friend, Judith Charles, Sargeant-Winter showed great resilience following the deaths of two of her children. Following several bouts of illness, which resulted in her becoming blind, Charles said her “memory and sense of touch were doubled.”
The funeral service was attended by many and there were several tributes in her honour. Among those in attendance were Members of the House of Assembly including Premier Dr The Hon. D. Orlando Smith, Deputy Premier Dr The Hon. Kedrick D. Pickering, Minister for Health and Social Development Hon. Ronnie W. Skelton, Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron V. Walwyn and Hon. Archibald C. Christian.
Sargeant-Winter, also formerly a Customs Officer and Ranger Guide, is survived by her brother Winfeild Sargeant, sister Esmie Nibbs, three sons Shane, Craig and Darren and numerous other relatives and friends.
The eulogy was read by one of her grandchildren, Shayne Winter, while readings were done by her grandson Steven Winter and special friend, Kather Smith.
The service was led by Reverends Sandra Malone and Esther Georges.
