BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI – Information coming into our News Centre is that the man shot last evening Saturday July 27, 2024, has been identified as Nashawnta Smith of Horse Path, on the main island of Tortola.

Mr. Smith was also shot on February 18, 2024, in Long Bush.

He remains at the Dr D. Orlando Smith Hospital and the extent of his condition is unclear.

We will bring more details as it becomes available.

Crime going up under CoP Collins?

Under the UK Commissioner of Police Mark Collins, crimes in all categories have skyrocketed despite local taxpayers being burdened with paying some close to 30 UK Police Officers, stationed in the Virgin Islands.

The UK police officers were brought into the Territory because Commissioner Collins claimed the local police officers do not have the skills to fight crime.

However, rather than solving the skyrocketing crime rate, the UK officers are allegedly being used as part of a plot and target list to go after locals with bogus arrests and charges.

Many of those targeted include residents who speak out against injustices in the police force, the legal system and the right of Virgin Islanders to be free from colonialism.

This is so sad. Condolences to the family. Let me get straight to the point as it see it. UNTIL males who have children start being MEN and FATHERS to the children and especially the sons, this nation will be in peril. The strength of a nation begins with the home and the family. Destroy the home and you will kill a nation. Just check how many of our young men live with their biological mother and father. Come on men, wake up and see what is going on. You cannot get children and not love them.

I agree with you 100%. But here is the problem. A father’s love is especially important to a girl child. When that space is left empty by the father the child becomes very vulnerable as she is longing for the feeling that a father’s love brings. Any idiot, and I mean any idiot who say anything that sounds close to good she will fall for. Food for thought but agree with you.

Fathers need to be responsible, but so do mothers. Girls need to finish their education and get married before they have children. Single mothers are a financial burden and the source of many of these unruly kids.

Many of these mothers originate from Caribbean Islands where sex is a way of life like tending your garden for a mea. Habits cannot be readily discarded. Some of their girl children still in school are practitioners of sex for hire...fathers are "may bees". Intact family units are a rarerity and not a requirement .In building your country, thoughts and consideration should have been paramount in choosing a demographic that favorably compliments that of the VI. Regrettably, that didn't happen and continues to not happen so now this super large group is dominant in habits that adversely affects the stability and future of these VI both socially and economically, These VIand its people were once a haven of peace harmony and beauty. It's so easy to try to shift blame and resort to generalities and caricatures of an island chain that's made up of several countries and millions of people. It's much harder to be introspective and to take the time to see what and where the problems are internally. Your comment is simplistic and unrealistic. If you truly look at the social history of the BVI, you will see that it is very similar to that of the countries you're condemning. There were and are many "indigenous" single parents; there were and are many relationships where "indigenous" people have serial partners, many where they live together for years without being married or get married after years of cohabiting. There are "indigenous" young women here who swap sex for jewelry and fancy clothes or for food for their children. There are some "indigenous" parents who accept the money their daughters bring into the home knowing that they didn't work for it and aware that the men they're involved with are engaged in illegal activities.
Hiding our heads in the sand and shifting blame will not solve our problems.

ugh! They have been doing that same exact strategy since 1972. 52 years later it still is not working. The more you squeeze with penalties and arrests the more profitable the drug, or whatever item is made illegal, becomes.

If porn was made illegal BET people will kill over it and sex trafficking will increase!

Guns, black markets, gangs and prohibition go together because when you can not sue or go to the police, the only way to settle the score is violence. Stop the knee jerk reactions and think about the consequences of our actions.

When alcohol was made illegal alcapone rose and violent crime spun out onto the streets. We repeat the same nonsense and call for more drug squads.

Now a days alcohol is legal and still very harmful but at least people don't kill over it, but they do kill while under it! They dont kill the bartender for a bad drink or a mixed up tab.

The increasing of criminal activities in the Territory has nothing to do with policing. There are countries where the police and civilians are working together to solve criminal activities. If parents are aware that their children are involved in criminal activities and condone what is taking place, we will not be able to solve the problems. Some of the criminals are the bread winner of the homes and as such they will not report to the police. So, if we condone what is taking place then we will face the consequence. Train a child the way you would like him or her to go so that when they get old, they will not depart. Failing to do so will result in Fire. Fire. May God help us all.

The police ARE to blame for our degradation of community spirit between us & them, who else is to blame? I specifically ask the management of policing to change its ways. I regard most of the police officers as mercenaries just doing what they are told to do.

Iv yet to meet one in uniform who is down to earth and not above us on their high horse except when the UK police came after Irma admittedly. They regarded me as a human not less than.

I was caught in a stop n search but ofcourse I wasnt doing anything wrong. The black police.... they treat me like a criminal in my own neighborhood, for no reason.

When some are hired to oppress their own race and their own people, then yes two cultures including an underworld will form. Those the police dont oppress, and those they do.

The simple fact that canabis is made out to be the devil, that lie is the cause of much distrust and disunity between the afro-Caribbean public and those who are here to police us.

I blame police management for our distrust of police. They shut their ears and continue doing the same behaviors which have led to this moment, a moment where they really dont know what to do! They dont know what to do in order to get the public back on the police side.

We are the police. The public is the real police, always has been.

If you are upholding laws that hurt the people, realize its only a degree of difference between regulating slavery, & locking people in a cage for a plant which is factually proven to be healthy. Could you follow orders to drop presents on palestinians like a good soldier? Consider.

It will cause confusion when people especially the youth realize and think for themselves about the problem of why their own culture & friends does not want police around when they hang out.

Its because they are not our police. They are very very very close to hired mercenaries who oppress for cash and uphold biased unjust laws, we celebrate them or supposedly respect them because they 'solve crime' & regulate traffic.

When the young adults are forced to hide their recreation for fear of incarceration, we really dont have to ask why current generations are less united with the police who dress in all black and prey on them for 1 gram of vegetable matter.

We really dont have to ask why... but I would ask why this young man wont say who is after him. Are we that far gone. If he believed in the village or the society he would talk.

They do not know what to do to get police & public back, all the UK management & other elites do is hope is that crime spirals out of control!

They want the public to beg for UK officers and another couple million dollars thrown to the force, to do as they have done in a cycle for decades. That is their solution to our problem, more crime. Consider it.
