This week’s Cultural Thursdays in Carrot Bay to feature cultural games
This Thursday's event will feature games and contests in which young people from the First District as well as other parts of the island will participate.
Cultural Thursdays Committee President Monica Howson said in a press release today, April 16, 2024, that the committee was thrilled to collaborate with VICA for this special event.
Ms Howson stated, “I am well aware of VICA’s goals and reputation for cultural preservation, so when the opportunity arose for us to work together, I saw only positive benefits arising.”
VICA President Melissa M. Potter said that she admired the Cultural Thursdays initiative from the very outset. Ms Potter added, “I like to see the community spirit behind the event and the authentic expressions of Virgin Islands culture. It aligns very much with the goals of VICA.”
This week’s Cultural Thursday takes place during school vacation and as a result, the games and such activities are focused on children, although there are activities aimed at adults as well. Games and contest plans include fish cleaning competition, three-legged race, cotta bundle race, can race, needle and thread race, lime and spoon race and tug of war.
The activities will begin at 3 pm at the Carrot Bay Field.
Cultural Thursdays shifts to once a month
The Cultural Thursday Group also announced it is shifting the event to once a month.
First District Representative Dr the Hon Karl Dawson said that periodic reviews were built into the initial plan for Cultural Thursdays.
According to him, the committee and the vendors agreed that once a month would be more practical for the vendors and may build more momentum for each occurrence.

It is the private sector that is keeping this country together. Do we really need a government? I wonder.
