This Week We Feature Young Professional Morey 'Moe' Wright Jr

This week we feature an extraordinary young man who is none other than Morey "Moe" Wright Jr, born to a single teenage mother on Mother's Day in the Virgin Islands. For such a blessing to be born on one of the most celebrated holidays, this young man grew to be an entrepreneur and CEO pursuing his passion of improving the everyday lives of others.
He was the first of six children and spent his early childhood growing up in East End, after which he relocated to Long Look as a teen. "I admire people like President Obama and Steve Jobs, but my hero if I was to say I have a hero, it will be my mom Denise Thomas,” he said.
He reminisced on his childhood visits to Salt Island where he spent holidays with his grandmother and his great aunt.
"Actually this was my first foray into business. I sold salt to tourist. On Salt Island I also learned how to communicate with different cultures from my great grandma Clementine Smith who received a MBE for her service to tourism," he said.
From that experience at age 8, young Morey found his calling into the business field. He attended the Willard Wheatley Primary School where he graduated salutatorian in 1996 after which he then went on to the BVI High School where he graduated in 2001.
"Academics fell off in High School, I went from 5’6 to 6’2 so basketball became my focus. Playing basketball on the court of Long Look taught me about niches. When everyone focused on scoring, I became a defensive specialist, and focused on rebounding and blocking. I went on to be 2001 Blockshot champion in the BVIABA Jr league,” he said.
He currently holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree from University of Florida and plans on pursuing an executive MBA.
Morey shared that most persons focus mainly on career paths and titles but for him his focus lies deeper than a title.
"As an entrepreneur I see myself pursuing a calling, and that calling is improving the everyday lives of others through entrepreneurship. Seven years ago, it was improving the lives of seniors, now it’s helping former non-violent prisoners rebuild their lives. So in essence, I can’t say what title I see myself with 10 years from now, I just see myself improving the lives of my fellow human beings and whatever title I have in pursuing my calling then so be it,” he said.
He also shared that in his purpose of improving the everyday lives of others, he can see himself running for public office one day.
Not about money
"Being an entrepreneur is more about solving society's problems than about wealth. And for me, it’s not only about one day amassing wealth. It’s more about creating products and businesses that will improve the everyday lives of my fellow human beings,” Morey said. He also shared a famous quote which he is very fond of, a quote from Mahatma Ghandi who said, “Be the change you want to see" and as an entrepreneur he believes you can be the change "you want to see in the world.”
The world of entrepreneurship is all about smart business of which Morey shared a personal example of an instance which he encountered. "When I started Net crossers (Service for Seniors), I was a personal banker, who saw Senior citizens needed help being ushered into the 21st century. Instead of continually watching them suffer, I spent a few years developing a software with some guys in Asia, then sold everything I owned to bring this service to market. I eventually sold this company to an investor for less than I invested,” he said.
His current job is running HD Fitness where he stated that he devoted his time and money to bring this product to market for reasons deeper than just money.
"I saw how this workout was transforming people's lives and I thought, wow, the world needs this," he said.
With this in mind, Morey led a team that helps former juvenile non-violent offenders bring a fitness product to market which promises to be very lucrative.
“Ironically, we just signed a partnership with a national infomercial company called Will It Launch that will start promoting Prison Body Workout on national TV beginning next year. This has potential to return hundreds of millions of dollars for our company, which can make me fantastically wealthy. But it’s not about money. It’s about helping these young men restore their lives.”
It is a programme he said he hopes to one day see introduced to the inmates at Her Majesty's Prison, Balsam Ghut.
This thoughtful and divinely inspired young entrepreneur invests in an area where not enough attention is given. It is well known that in some areas of the world someone with a criminal record finds it hard to get a job. Morey noticed that, “Big corporations don’t care about them and most of our young best and brightest entrepreneurs want to create the next Facebook or Instagram and instantly get rich. Whereas I believe if we only focus on those who are winning today, we will have no tomorrow,” he said.
On the social side, our Young Professional enjoys numerous hobbies such as golf, basketball and traveling of which he shared that the most exotic place he has ever been to was Japan which he visited last year.
Advice to youth
His advice to youth is to live a life of purpose, not status. He said their measurement of success shouldn't be what they have in society but what they give to society. "Nelson Mandela and Harriet Tubman had following titles: Prisoner and Slave but they gave more to society than any doctor or lawyer that walked this planet,” he said.
