GEORGETOWN, St. Vincent & The Grenadines - Persons from the orange zone in St Vincent and the Grenadines who have been staying in emergency shelters following the La Soufriere eruption were expected to begin returning to their homes.

This does not apply to those persons from Fitz Hughes and Chateaubelair.   

Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, who is in Cuba, stated this earlier today during a telephone call to the Face-to-Face programme on NBC Radio. 

Gonsalves indicated that NEMO will assist persons with transportation if required.  

He said persons going back out there will receive the usual form of assistance for a period of time including food packages, while from next month an announcement will be made regarding the start of cash payments.  

The prime minister said it is necessary for persons to get back into their homes to clean up. He said from next week, persons from the red zone will be able to go back to the red zone south of Rabacca as substantial cleaning up has been done. 

Gonsalves explained that the government needs to get back into the shelters to fix the schools in time for September, noting there is a significant number of repairs to be done.

    I believe that the evacuees occupy the schools and the students need to go back to school but it’s too soon to move back into the unsafe zones. That volcano is unpredictable and dangerous .
