LONG BUSH, Tortola, VI– Virgin Islands Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has posited that more organised sports and events targeting youths will work towards reducing crime in the territory.

“We seeing some violence in our community right now, and really the solution for that and the cure for that is more sports, more organised activities where the young people can recognise authority, learn the values of practice, values of hard work, teamwork,” he said.

The Premier was speaking at the opening of the Raymond 'Mahasa' Mercer & Kathleen Fahie National Fast Pitch League at E. Walwyn Brewley Softball Park in Long Bush on Saturday, April 6, 2024.

Some 13 teams are taking part in the league.

Mercer & Fahie are our heroes- Premier

Dr Wheatley said Raymond Mercer and Kathleen Fahie laid the foundation for those in the sport.

“And we have to give them a round of applause…. what they have done for the boys and islands. They are our heroes. They are our heroes and I appreciate the fact that their children are involved in athletics and sports, specifically softball,” he said.

The Premier added that young people representing the VI in college or on the international level are a source of pride for him.

Meanwhile, appreciation was extended to the President of the Virgin Islands Softball Baseball Association, Rhodni A. Skelton, and his team "for the vision that they have shown.”

Got to tackle it from the root my friend. Although I do agree that police presence and harsher sentencing also can help in detouring crime.

It’s sad that so many dislike your post YET USE GOD’S NAME WHEN IT SUITS THEM.

Though there are other ways to deter violence there is absolutely no reason to dislike your post unless they are against God.

What simplicity and shallow thought. The prblems of increasing crime is directly correlated to no jobs, no quality jobs and no real pay for labor done. Very few are willing to work for $6.00 an hour when ^.00 cannot but a loaf of bread and a can of milk.

The problem is poor salary for work done and no jobs to be had.

That's a big part the problem. When people are hurting for money, some those get feed up and turn to crimes.

So yeah that's part of it.

Bro. Hard life. Maybe you in denial but its hard out here for a lot, a lot of people..People need better pay, better living conditions.. Failure to give people hope and a better life are part of the violence...Bob Marley said, "they keep us hungry, so we can beg them food". - "A hungry man is an angry man.. Facts!!

True premier but there has to be programs for the youth. Community basketball (sports) leagues where inclusion is the top priority and sportsmanship is mandatory would help

    This man...
TheCaribbean Islands that rank highest globally in crime are avid players of soccermbaseball,running,jumping.. they are proficient in sport,. The carnivals in effect, athletic events
..ex . Jamaica Trinidad St Vincent DR..
Suggestions to lessen even eliminate crime would be to practice safe sex . Bringing children into a World where they have zero examples of intact families, unknown and unidentified Daddys mothers as prostitutes has created insensitivity to fellow humans, humanity and a likeness to behave as wild and lesser animals.

Crap, the solution to the violence is more empowerment or entrepreneurship, go give BVI a 1/2 acre on all those cays out in the water instead of the rich buying them to make them their homes and use the virgin islands development bank to give concessionary loans for BVI people to build boutique hotels, you want fight colonialism try give the resources to the people. England would be mad and leave you all to independence.

What is needed are creative activities, not organised activities.
