ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Smith’s Ferry Services Limited is boasting the arrival of its newest ferry- ‘I Legend’, which officially joined its fleet on Monday, November 18, 2024.

The vessel is dedicated to the legacy of the founder of Smith’s Ferry Services Limited, the late Captain Ira L. Smith.

State-of-the-art features

I Legend, which is equipped with state-of-the-art safety features and is designed to accommodate 149 passengers, will ply the VI to St Thomas, US Virgin Islands (USVI) route.

According to a press release from Smith’s Ferry Services, the new ferry boasts advanced technology, ensuring efficient and reliable transportation across the waters. “With a spacious deck, comfortable seating, and environmentally friendly operations, ‘I Legend’ exemplifies our commitment to innovation and sustainability,” the press release stated.

New ferry likely to begin commercial operations next month

I Legend was built in Australia and transported to Texas, where Captain Rikky L. Baynes and Captain Kaheen Farrington, grandsons of the late Captain Ira L. Smith, along with Captain Arthur King and other experienced crew, undertook a week-long journey to bring the ferry to the Virgin Islands.

“We are thrilled to welcome ‘I Legend’ to our fleet,” said Marjorie E. Smith, President of Smith’s Ferry Services Ltd. “This vessel not only enhances our service capacity but also pays tribute to my father Captain Ira L. Smith, whose vision laid the foundation for our company. We are excited to announce that ‘I Legend’ is expected to make its inaugural commercial run in late December to early January. At that time an official launch event will be held to celebrate this exciting addition.”

Smith’s Ferry Services also said the new vessel is a vital asset for the VI’s growing community and tourism industry. It also said Smith’s Ferry remains dedicated to providing safe, reliable, and efficient transportation options for all.

Really? Round trip on Smiths to StT works out to be $ 126 plus $15-20 departure tax, and $ 15 tax at StT to come back. Call it $ 175. Direct EIS-MIA on basic economy first week of December is $ 800. Go via SJU, RT fare is $ 300 for same dates. Tell us how you can fly to mainland and back for $ 175

I would like to extend congratulations to Smith's Ferry Service for acquiring this new vessel. May God bless them to provide efficient service to everyone so that they will remain viable. As Virgin Islanders, we must support our people and I hope that it will be able to provide good service for a very long time. God bless.

We as British Virgin Islands need to stick together. We quick to bring down the locals but have no problem building up the outsiders. Do not get me wrong, I love all people but we the only people that do not stick together. Come on people of the BVI. Let's be proud of our people and what they are doing for the country. Congratulations to the Smith Family for keeping the dream of Mr. Ira Smith alive.
