ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The [British] Virgin Islands continues to welcome more and more inaugural call of cruise ships to its ports.

Today, February 14, 2024, the British Virgin Islands Ports Authority (BVIPA) in collaboration with the Tortola Pier Park Ltd (TPPL), British Virgin Islands Tourist Board (BVITB) and local ship agent Island Shipping Trading Co. Increased tourist arrivals expected in 2024

The Premier’s Office is projecting increased tourist arrivals this year.

The Virgin Islands welcomed some 995,000 tourists in 2023, which is a record number in recent years,

The 995,000 visitors in 2023 were just short of 1.1 million, which is the highest number of arrivals recorded in 2016.

Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) detailed last month that the VI has a great tourism product; however, there are some areas that can be improved upon and that remains a mandate of his administration.

We should be grateful for the tourists coming to the Territory. Some of us go to other countries and do not enjoy what the tourists are enjoying here. Local residents do not even go to the Baths and enjoy the beach. The tourists love these islands, and they are coming to enjoy themselves. If the government fix the roads and ask the motorists to pay one dollar toll to cross the bridge at Beef Island or add five dollars on vehicle license, many persons will protest. However, the revenue from toll and license can assist to maintain the roads. I would not mind paying five dollars more for my vehicle license. After all this is our country and here is where we live. We need better roads to drive on and the government must maintain it when it is damage by our vehicles. When we leave this Territory and go to other countries, we stop at toll gates to pay toll fees, especially in New York and Dominica Republic and NO ONE quarrel. I expect many will ridicule me for my suggestion.

Don’t forget to cut the grass from the road so you will know where the side ends, I was so scared that I was going to fall off the sides while driving over the ridge roads, when I visited, the grass and weeds have the roads unbearable to drive. They need to get somebody to trim it back.
