RVIPF debuts 'year-long' police week 2020 celebrations

-Career Expo set for March 27 with full schedule of event to be released soon

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) officially kicked off its 'Police Week' 2020 celebrations on February 2020 with an announcement that this year's celebration will run for an entire year, instead of the customary one week.

This is according to a March 5, 2020, RVIPF release which noted that a list of year-long events will commemorate 53 years of service within the Virgin Islands (VI) and that started with a Church Service on February 23, 2020, at the Transformational Church International in East End, Tortola. 

Career Expo Scheduled 

According to the RVIPF press release, the next upcoming event is a Career Expo scheduled for March 27, 2020, between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm at the Road Town Police Station, where attendees will get an inside look at the various units and their functions within the RVIPF and applications will be accepted on-site.

"It will also enable members of the community who may be thinking about a career in policing to gain a unique insight into the roles and responsibilities of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force," Police Information Officer, Akia Thomas noted.

Commissioner of Police, Michael B. Matthews commenting on the initiative said, “Our Police Week celebration is a key point in our calendar but this year we wanted to expand our ambitions in terms of connecting with our diverse communities." 

Mr Matthews said the events throughout the year will focus on reinforcing community ties while pointing out the critical importance of the partnership and relationship between the RVIPF and the people they serve.  

Vacancies announced 

According to the Top CoP, he is particularly excited about events including the Career Expo designed to encourage young local people to step up to the challenge of modern policing and play a part in the safety and security of the Territory.

"We have vacancies for Regular and Auxiliary officers this year and will continue with our strategy of expanding the force to ensure we can always deliver effective and efficient policing across the range of policing responses expected of us.”

The RVIPF noted that the remaining schedule of events will be circulated once finalized and the public is encouraged to support all of the upcoming events when announced.

    Applications to streamline our police force should not just be opened to an open house. How are these persons screened? and where is the pull to attract locals to this field?
