ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – In a spectacular display of culture in the Virgin Islands (VI) revellers in this year’s 2023 August Monday Parade in the Virgin Islands (VI) faced the heat to turn out in numbers as the emancipation celebrations took to the street of Road Town, Tortola, for the August Monday Parade.

The jam-packed parade, which began at around 1:00 PM on Monday, August 7, 2023, saw dazzling entries ranging from the troupes, floats, trucks, vehicles, individual entries, and more moving to the sound of soca and other rhythms through the streets of Road Town.

In the mid-day heat with with thousands of revealers ready to gyrate through the streets of Road town, the parade left Road Reef and proceeded Waterfront Drive, making its way to the Irene Penn-O’Neal Festiville to complete the one-and-a-half-mile-long route.

Residents, tourists, and families who lined the parade route witnessed a number of floats and bands including a stand-out float that featured a giant whale on a truck bed.

Earlier on August Monday morning August 7, 2023, thousands of revellers took to the streets with paint, powder and music for the usual wet fete & J'ouvert known as the Emancipation Rise and Shine Tramp.

We need to rethink the festival parade. Get the schools involved and take those STRIPPERS off the road. That’s what the strip clubs are for

When we had festival years ago, no self-respecting women would not dare show their bodies like that. Now all of their bosses, coworkers, parents, students, and churchgoers know how they really are. I was disturbed and embarrassed. BVI, please don't allow these vulgar costumes in our parades anymore. Participants should be made to show the costumes they want to wear, and it should be approved or disapproved by the committee, period! If the committee cannot make wise choices, then get a new committee. Bring back the RESPECT we used to have and stop FORCE FEEDING our children with this poison. Case closed!

You have aright to describe the troupe participants as revellers due to the the type of costumes they were. They should have been dressed as celebrants of emancipation, well clothed yet colourful. It was shameful and disgraceful to see women with their costume underwear so low that their crutch was in full view and at the back a string stuck in the slit of their buttocks. The way these women displayed themselves was horrifying. On the truck with Vybes Band were two young girls not much older than 13 or 14 dressed in the same manner, turning their backs to the viewers and shaking their bodies in this leude manner. I suggest that there be some regulations made for the next Emancipation celebration for the fashion of costumes to be worn.

I also was concerned about the lyrics of a song being played by the same band. I heard the words (murder them). I was scared that there may be an indication that murder is not a crime and it was an incentive for persons to freely go out and kill someone. Things have got to change in this little country of ours.

The first picture on the very top and another one are so whorish. Who is in charge of the outfits that should be allowed? Pure trash and unbecoming to our emancipation festival. We are so much more than these representations. I said it before, little children should not witness this sleazy garbage, and neither should we adults. A lot of costumes look very beautiful and respectful and clean representing what it should be. There need to be separate parades, one for children and respectful adults, and if they want, one for the whoremongers. I said it and this is the opinion of many of us young and old because respect has no age limit. I did not attend the parade and these pictures reinforced my reasons for the last few years to not attend. Sad, because all of my life I had enjoyed and looked forward to them and even had my children and grandchildren partake in the parades, but not anymore. Our small islands, in the last few years, have become dumping grounds for anyone who wants to dump their garbage ideas on us, and we have allowed it. The organizers can turn this around in the future if they wanted to.

I agree with you. They could have put better photos than that of a nasty, naked bottom woman. Ms. Parson is right - just flesh and feathers. It is not a good example for our young people. They want to dress like whores or strippers, go to the strip clubs. That is very unbecoming in an Emancipation parade. It is time to stop these vulgar behaviour during our parade

In picture #4. those thunder thighs, she know should have been covered along with picture #1. How do you show the entire BVI what should be sacred and wear appropriate clothing to respect yourself? Now that the entire BVI has seen all of you

Ladies please note that the men are fully covered. Also their wives are home in their bed. But u are out throwing your naked self in their crutch. Have respect for yourselves by dressing appropriately. It should be a cultural event.

Happy for the whale float. Seems not too many people decorate their floats with a theme anymore but just a truck thrown together last minute with people dancing or playing music.

The costumes/ swimsuits are OK if the buttocks and breasts are decently covered but when you bare everything with so many children around then I have a problem with it. Then you have the sexual gyrations on top of that. It's not that I consider myself a prude. It's the message that is being sent to the kids. Their minds are being developed and we are telling them that this is OK and acceptable. You can keep it in the j'ouvert cause children should NOT be taken to j'ouvert. People from all walks of life usually attend the parade and we need to respect our seniors, church folk, and children. Come on bvi govt we need to listen to the residents. I thing the clarion call is clear. What will be done about it?

Indecent Exposure is an offense on the law books in the BVI. Ladies are exposing their bottom and breast which makes it an offense. For 70th celebrations I believe the festival committee must address this matter with mask players and come up with a decision for suitable dress code for parade.

That was no emancipation parade in the heat. If you ask me I'll would tell you it was more like when dogs in heat. Sad to see what the bvi culture come to. Yes things have changed but is this the culture you are feeding the local tourism sector and schools with? It's a shame and we expect our youth to be and do better. I got news for you. Stop bashing them because you are no better than they are. Shameful what a disgrace to society.

As a woman myself i am so embarrassed when i view those pictures. We can and have to do better than this.

Well look my peace! Is that tasteless display of daylight orgies what my hard-earned taxes are funding? Captain, stop the boat. I want OUT. Where are our morals? This shameful display of blatant vulgarity is an embarrassment and a slap in the face of what our forefathers fought so hard for. Here we are, trying our best to instil morals in our youths and we have this high level of lewd indecency being displayed in front of their eyes. It needs to STOP!!!.

Even the roosters appear to be disgusted with the *exy chickens chasing behind them now.

We need to rethink our festival and if we can't do any better than the BVI PORNO that is shamelessly being practiced on our streets in those Rise and Shine Tramps/Jouverts and Festival Parades, then let's forget about our emancipation celebration. PERIOD!!! It is a farce and we need to draw our brakes NOW!!

Where is the voice of the Christian Council through all of this? Are they going to take a stand against this level of vulgarity for the 70th celebration or are they going to remain tight lipped? We’ll wait and see.

I cry tears that just cannot be shed...my heart is overwhelmed! Just to think, our enslaved forefathers, especially women's dignity was literally stripped from their bodies while on the auction block, being flogged and raped. And now this is the way we as women honour them by debasing their memory with so little attire that brought so much shame and disgrace to them?

I add my voice and appeaĺ to the Festival and Fairs Committee, let us as a Virgin Islands people not go down in history as a people who dishonoured our ancestors by placing no value on the blood they shed, rape they endured, and inhumane treatment suffered!

May our ancestors as well as the God who was their strong tower, forgive us.

A native Virgin Islander to the Nth generation
