ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has encouraged the Virgin Islands people to support their Premier and Minister of Finance Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1), who he pointed out has been bold in standing up for the people of the territory.

Dr Wheatley, speaking at the 13th Annual African Remembrance Wreath Laying Ceremony on Sunday, February 7, 2021, in Road Town said: “You have a premier, he hasn’t called himself this, but I am calling him an anti-colonialist and I was saying even when he was speaking I was saying you could give him some more energy because some of the things he was saying he needs to be backed up.”

Premier Fahie had delivered the keynote address at the ceremony, where he reflected on the way Africans were enslaved, their sacrifices and the challenges they faced in their fight for freedom. He also spoke about the challenges descendants of slaves face today and why some are afraid for the Virgin Islands to come out of colonialism.

“Even though we might disagree with the premier on one or two issues locally here, whether we build this, or how we do this or how we do that; don’t take it for granted that you have a leader of a territory who is not afraid to stand up for the people and is not afraid to assert our rights as people because you and I know this thing called colonialism is not right,” he added.

The Deputy Premier stated that at times residents are fearful when the topic of not being under this colonial system anymore surfaces, however, “when you have a leader who is willing to stand up and fight against it, give him some backup.”

Hon Fahie has been championing the call for the Virgin Islands to begin to make moves to break the shackles of colonialism by seeking self-determination. His call has been supported by both sides of the aisle in the Virgin Islands House of Assembly, who are united in the view that self-determination is inevitable and the VI must be prepared.

Insecurity the challenge

According to political pundits, there are some; however, who feel the Virgin Islands should not go the route of self-determination or independence as they do not have the confidence that their own people can independently manage the affairs of the nation.

Further, their insecurity has led them to believe that financial services will be ruined and corruption will run rampant if the VI severs its cord with the United Kingdom, which once enslaved their ancestors.

Changes

Meanwhile, Dr Wheatley further pointed out that under Premier Fahie’s leadership, there have been a lot of changes that serve to bring pride, knowledge and confidence to the Virgin Islands people.

“Under his leadership, we named the August holidays – they were August Monday, August Tuesday, August Wednesday – we named them Emancipation Monday, Emancipation Tuesday and Emancipation Wednesday. But I don’t hear much about it in the community, and I think if anywhere, people who have gained that knowledge we need to back him up as a leader.”

He continued: “Under his leadership, we have a new holiday – Heroes and Foreparents Day; we cannot allow things like that to pass unnoticed. It is important that we have days to celebrate our heroes. Don’t take it for granted.”

He said the VI also got rid of celebrating St Ursula’s Day and is now celebrating the 1949 March and Restoration of the Legislature.

I wonder why the Premier does not simply have a referendum to see if the people wish to go independent? Then he would have his mandate...or not.

Why are we afraid of independence? It's not because we don't think that we can run it. The VI is nothing more than a tourism business and if we don't destroy the product ( land, Sea and Hospitality ) we'll always have customers. If the leaders are not capable we'll change them. So I conclude that we are afraid of the UK's retaliation possibilities similar to what France and the European powers did to Haiti. We are afraid of political and military revenge that will make it difficult to navigate the the self determination waters. A good example is the constant attack on the financial industry. That is why we hardly ever see them attack financial giants but consistently pick on small and weaker operators because of their inability to fight back.

Gain knowledge first before you use Josiah's Bay as your nickname. What do you know about FI? The BVI has not been singled out in any attack of the FI. Our FSC and Government has been superb with sticking together and being resilient

I wonder if some people cannot see that right now there are benefits to not being independent.

Do they not know that should we no longer have the 'backing' of the UK, that we could potentially be in a worse off situation? Why not analyze the situation instead of coming on here inciting the people about this 'Colonialism' antics topic. Show the REAL BIG picture to the people!

Man, you couldn't see the big picture if it fell on you. The United Nation have determine that your rights to self determination is paramount. So we have to become part of or associate with someone or pursue self-determination. There is no benefits to our relationship with the UK as it now stand. There's uncertainty and lack of maturity. If in your opinion the relationship is beneficial then choose integration but you wont because you will loose whatever special considerations that you now have. Grow up, choose, we can't stay bogged down in the quicksand of uncertainty. Either we choose or eventually the decision will be made for us..

@josiah'sbay You don't have a clue about what you are talking about. you say that The VI is nothing more than a tourism business and if we don't destroy the product ( Land, Sea, and Hospitality ) we'll always have customers. The government always tell us that our biggest income comes from offshore banking, If we were that stupid to go independent the Trust Companies would be gone, How much are we making from tourism now?

@PT009 The financial business have never been or will it ever be a staple or stable business for the VI. It was an opportunistic endeavor with an unpredictable timestamp. If you took it for more than that you're probable naïve or gullible. We must build "who we are" with what we have and use opportunities as a push.

If the Governments of the time stopped using the people's money to further their own causes and actually invested in the country with good schools, infrastructure, and utilities we would be happy to go independent but currently, the country is rotting and the good bits keep being cut off for the use of the top 1% without actually fixing the rot. I am soooo disappointed that the current Govt with all their promises is not actually making the country better. The schools have not been improved, The roads, sewage etc but let's spend all our time worrying about if people like us and are 'for' us. The Premier was all about low hanging fruit, well now you need to put your big boy pants on and do the hard work to actually improve peoples lives. Instead of listening to the people who are YES men with inflated agendas get out your bubble of bodyguards and spend time talking to the real people - even the ones you know that don't like you.

What specific aspects of "colonialism" are so abhorrent, and how will independence salve them? What will be the fate of the British passport? Will we be still using the US $? Generalised speeches are nothing more than propaganda. Put forward w comprehensive analysis and stop generalizing for the purpose of appeasing sensitivities.

Jesus will take care of all of that, as He always have. We have to stop living in mental slavery. Colonialism is evil. It is time to come out of the slave masters house and recognize that God has already built us our own sustainable homes. Far away from the master’s estate and it is sooo beautiful that they Envy our blessings, but God has given it to us as an inheritance for all the pain and suffering that the evil slave masters inflicted on our people. It’s time to open our eyes and see through God’s eyes! We are already free!

Yet here we have insensitive and racist over tones in these comments

You don’t want to hear about 300 years ago how about decades ago when racial segregation ended in America, or recently when ....

if you don’t realize racism today negatively impacts people of color, then your a lost cause.
