NEW YORK, US- Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has reaffirmed the government’s position that the United Kingdom (UK) Order in Council that can suspend the Virgin Islands’ (VI) constitution is not necessary and should be removed as completion of governance reforms is finalised.

According to a press release from the Office of the Premier on October 16, 2024, Premier Wheatley told this to the United Nations (UN) Fourth Committee at the 79th Session of the General Assembly in New York.

“We remain of the view that it is undemocratic, unnecessary and should be lifted. This would not only be a positive development for the UK-BVI relationship but also for the reputation of the UK regionally and internationally,” Premier Wheatley said.

The Premier also stated that he looks forward to the new UK Minister of the Overseas Territories, Hon Stephen J. Doughty to the VI in November for continued discussions on governance reform and building a modern partnership between the UK and the VI that supports self-determination and advances the mutual goals of sustainable development, climate change, economic resilience, security and democracy.

Premier Wheatley highlighted the successful visiting mission to the Territory by the UN Special Committee on Decolonization (C-24) that assessed the progress of decolonisation from August 26 to 27, 2024.

The Premier also thanked the C-24, Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and UK Permanent Mission to the UN for their roles in ensuring the visiting mission took place.

While in New York, Premier Wheatley was accompanied by Special Envoy Mr. E. Benito Wheatley.

He also paid a courtesy call on the Chair of the C-24 Her Excellency Ambassador Menissa Rambally who is also the Permanent Representative of Saint Lucia to the UN.

Its not for him to say. Apart from paper exercises what has actually changed? No prosecutions, no register of interests, no public tender notices, no explanation of the farmers and fishers giveaways.

Order in Council is necessary and it need to activate NOW!!! Either that or immediate dissolving of the house for a snap election after a no confidence vote.

Says the guy that thinks the no confidence vote isn’t important. What is more important than democracy?

This is a statement from a history student with no business, financial or global relations acumen or experience. No wonder we are in the shape we are in.

Sir the order in council is very necessary, because the same way we behaved ourselves into this situation, we are now REFUSING to change our unethical and immoral practices, to behave ourselves OUT of this level of oversight. The BVI electorate is to blame - we elected people that don't have the capacity to reach the hat on the top shelf to cover our heads. Long live the BVI practices of self-serving interests, cronyism, hand outs and blind partisanship. Private entities are FAR more disciplined, regulated and transparent.

    Why is this still allowed?
Just so sick and tired of this inept, overpaid and under worked, self-serving government.

It's sad that the UK had to keep y'all in check just to do right by the people. But you guys are the same ones crying out for independence smh

Put the people first and we will never allow it even if they place it on us.

Look how long it took to get that one gangster out of Jamacia because he helped the community the people wouldn't give him up! People died for him. Much more will people support a good political team who was voted on.

What we see now isn't inspiring loyalty. Time to be scared is over do something crazy genius unconventional for the people, that's why people liked Andrew as a politician in spite of his foolishness. He knew what people need & want and wasn't afraid. He did the fast track for non-locals, and he would have fostered a relationship with China as a believer in Chinese medicine another reason the racists had to set him up.

He was like Trump a loose cannon for the people not the establishment.

As a fat man greed was his Achilles heel & not listening to himself talk about aliens & trickster entities trying to get in the chicken house like a hungry fox.

He told the whole territory to watch out and fell in the same incarceration trap for black people harder than anyone. From riches to rags. Sold himself for paper. Totally fooled like natives the world over for trinkets.

Today news came out that Raytheon a US missile maker defrauded the US government for millions close to a hundred million. Not one of them are going to jail. They are fined $950 million. Back to making profit off the wars. They arent black and can pay, that is how the system works.

The energy to make a change for the people is weak now. I honestly expected better from someone into Africa studies, where is the push for self dependence. Independence is not given else it is a piece of paper & we fool ourself that we are independent.

Independence without eliminating dependency is a lie & another set up. The UK is not god they can not control natural forces & break bread when we are hungry like Jesus, neither can we.

Energy for entertainment featuring questionable characters that give black people a bad name is high sky. After all that happened how could you support a man named Vybz KARTEL.
