ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has called out the hypocrisy of Members of the Opposition for constantly criticising the government for travelling on government business when they themselves have been travelling on the public's purse.

Premier Wheatley was speaking in the House of Assembly (HoA) on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, in his wrap-up of the Scheduling of Additional Provisions (SAP) debate during the continuation of the Twentieth Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth House of Assembly (HoA).

The Premier could not understand how the opposition had the nerve to criticise the government for travelling on the eve of Members of the Opposition travelling to Australia.

Opposition has 'no shame'- Premier

The Opposition, Premier Wheatley said, would “magnify the negative and minimise the positive...criticise you for things they’ve either done in the past or they presently doing...ignore what has been accomplished and focus on things which have not been accomplished as yet, and when those things are accomplished, they just move on to the next negative thing.”

Dr Wheatley summed it up as the Opposition having “no shame” in what they do” and that they have “no conscience”.

Furthermore, Dr Wheatley called out the Opposition for coming after the government in the media and using the government's travels as the reason the lives of the people are hard.

“When they were in government, they were all travelling. In fact, they in the Opposition and they still travelling," Dr Wheatley said, adding that their trips are "more lavish and more expensive" than anyone in government.

The Premier also noted that only recently Opposition Member Hon Lorna G. Smith, OBE (AL) travelled to Hong Kong and even travelled with him to London when she served in government.

Opposition heading to Australia!

While Members of the Opposition continue to criticise the government on their travels, Premier Wheatley informed the HoA that "some of the Members" of the Opposition are set to embark on a "big trip” to Australia. "Gone to see the kangaroos," Hon Wheatley quipped.

“If I were the Members of the Opposition I wouldn’t mention travel. I mean, I would keep it quiet...I mean right on the eve of travel you going to come and talk about travel.”

Dr Wheatley also blasted the Opposition for criticising the government for having consultants. "Each and every one of them, when they were in government, had consultants. They know you can't run a government without consultancy."

Ok, Cindy, we get it, time to pack it in sweetheart. I don't usually agree with Sowande but I agree with him here. The Opposition are weaklings and are the real reason we have this VIP Government in place.

There's a saying that half-truths are sometimes worse than lies. Premier Wheatley is being disingenuous - Mrs. Smith's travel to Hong Kong and London was on government business as a member of his government; the members travelling to Australia are doing so as part of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association. That is standard work-related travel that involves both side of the House. Totally sad that he has to resort to this type of response. Be an adult and just do the people's work!
    • So a justification for theirs (31/10/2024, 13:11) Like (17) Dislike (5) Reply
So there is justification for their travel but no condemnation for them bringing it up as an issue? The same way you can state half truths about his examples about their travels then that would equally apply to his administrations travel right? So you are being completely disingenous.

So all the members knew Hon. penn was not going to be present hence the convenience of not going back to the session after the break, disrespecting not only the Speaker and Honourable Opposition who are pushing the bid of the majority for the vote of No Confidence. Ok

This guy is so petty and simple minded. He is really criticizing Lorna for travelling with him to London as a member of the government. Really!

Why cant we see a report on the costs associated with these trips..flights hotels etc etc.
Its our money being used..we have a right to see it.
Where do all the air miles go..does the government have an airmile business account to save them to be used for upcoming travel..or is it just another perk for the government traveller
Show us please. Quartely report or post each trip

Mr. Premier, stop being unprofessional and childish. Went to Australia to see the Kangaroos? Are you talking about the actual animal or are you referring to the people of Australia as Kangaroos?

Reasonable travel for both government and opposition on relevant training, committee meetings,,conferences, etc which would improve governing is a sunk cost. Here is a news the opposition travelling does not wipe out the criticism of Premier and members of governing travel. The Premier was petty for picking on Lorna for travel she made while a part of his government.,This is much to criticize her for but travel criticism was a misfire. The Premier should have hold his on this. It is an unforced error. Governing and conducting government business should wreak of professionalism. There is a dearth of professionalism in the HoA, which may be driven by inexperience., The Premier needs to lead the pack , exercising fire disciple, seething the example.

It sounds a little condescending when the Premier said the Oppression went to Australia to see the Kangaroos. That was a low blow below the belt. Mr. Premier, some people are saying that you are referring to Australians as Kangaroos. As a leader you should know better.

Hope the Auditor General is going to audit these trips and make the report public. It is the tax payers money that is being used and as such we have a right to know.
