More quarantine rooms needed for detainees in Immigration custody – Premier Fahie
Premier and Minister of Finance, Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) said this was one of the decisions made by Cabinet yesterday, July 8, 2020.
“Due to the need for additional rooms for Government quarantine purposes to accommodate detainees in Immigration custody, the contract period previously approved for the occupancy of Paradise Suites Hotel be extended by two (2) weeks covering the period, 1 April to 15 July 2020,” he said in a statement.
He did not indicate how many detainees would be housed there or the cost the extension would incur.
Some 10 illegal immigrants from Haiti and a Dominican boat captain were recently held at Paradise Suites Hotel following their arrest at Prickly Pear Island and Leverick Bay on Virgin Gorda.
Detainees are held at Paradise Suites Hotel on a short term basis, usually until they are deemed safe to be taken to Her Majesty's Prison in Balsam Ghut or deported.
Hotel Prison
On April 9, 2020, His Excellency Governor Augustus J.U. Jaspert said some six rooms at the hotel was to be used as a prison.
The decision was publicised in the Government’s Official Gazette.
The publication stated that Governor Jaspert signed the order declaring rooms 110, 111,112,113,114,115 and 116 as a prison as per Section 4A of the Virgin Islands Prison Ordinance (Cap. 166), which states that “the governor may, by proclamation … declare any place to be a prison”.
Quarantine has become necessary since the coronavirus pandemic struck. It is to prevent the spread of the virus in the Territory.
