ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- On Friday, October 11, 2024, the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change made an official launch of a new motor vessel called Vigilate.

Vigilate is set to enhance monitoring, and surveillance of Territorial waters and will play a crucial role in combating illegal fishing and improving environmental management.

It will also extend its support to the Sister Islands, allowing for more comprehensive oversight and safeguarding of the VI's natural environment.

According to Premier and Minister for Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), the vessel will help tackle illegal fishing, “particularly from foreign commercial vessels.”

Premier Wheatley also said the vessel, a Grady-White, will give the VI the ability to investigate and respond to reports of vessel groundings, marine oil spills and other marine pollution incidents.

‘Be Watchful’

Dr Wheatley noted that Vigilate, which is a Latin word that translates to ‘Be Watchful’, sits at the base of the territorial badge, and is the aptly selected name for the Ministry’s monitoring and surveillance vessel.

The leader of government business thanked the Resembid Programme funded by the European Union and implemented by Expertise France for providing the vessel.

“The contribution of Vigilate as a monitoring and surveillance vessel is a perfect example of where just small investments can make a world of difference.”

Premier Wheatley also noted that the project represents the last “bit of funding” the VI is getting from the European Union since the UK has since exited the EU.

That boat is far from capable of stopping any illegal commercial fishing from foreign vessels many miles out at sea. You people are so easily misled.

What about its predecessor Vigilante? Is that scrap now? How long do you give this one before it is laid up for want of repairs?

I agree with the notion that they need to monitor the cost it takes to "be watchful" because while it is noble that we are implementing these new processes and procedures we can't let it be another fruitless tree or in other words a meaningless venture. What's the point of paying the police if the police if they are not catching the criminals. Criminals in this case being illegal fishers and police representing the vigilante boaters. The costs associated with it will be too great, how about instead we let our law enforcers take on the task as the are the ones that are stopping the illegal imports of drugs and guns in the territory. Just food for thought!

Well maintained GWs hulls last over 20+ years; just visit eastern PR. The OB engines are replaced every 3-10 years depending on engine hours and degree of maintenance.

Any bets these engines are dead in a year and the hull is laid up in a boatyard at government expense?

What happened to the medical boat the government refitted to move people between the islands. It was a fire boat then refitted with great expense and not in use since. There is no maintenance staff or schedules in place to keep these boats going. Sigh another waste of money.
