ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- “We see you! We value you! We appreciate you! You are the heartbeat of the healthcare system,” Minister for Health and Social Development Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) told nurses during his message on Mational Nurses Week 2025, celebrated last week under the theme: Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies.

The Health Minister noted that while the territory celebrates nurses, it is also cognisant that words must be matched by action.

“This is why, as Minister for Health and Social Development, I continue to advocate on your behalf for more competitive compensation packages, increased training opportunities, and the resources you need to perform your duties safely and effectively.

“You deserve not just our appreciation, but our investment — because, as this year’s theme emphasises, when we support our nurses, we strengthen our entire economy,” Hon Wheatley said.

Updated Alliance Agreement

Additionally, Hon Wheatley said the Ministry is in the final stages of completing the updated Alliance Agreement between the National Health Insurance and the BVI Health Services Authority.

He said the revised agreement introduces new payment models, “which will benefit you, our nurses, strengthened quality standards, and greater transparency. These improvements will enhance service delivery, improve patient outcomes, and support the long-term sustainability of our health system.”

Hon Wheatley added that the Ministry of Health and Social Development remains committed to strengthening nursing in The Virgin Islands — not only to meet the current demands of healthcare, but to prepare for the future.

“A future in which nurses are respected, empowered, and supported to lead,” Hon Wheatley said.

Sir are you sitting in the Opposition and therefore you are limited to only advocating?? You are the Minister of Health for crying out loud. What policies or other steps are you taking to turn your advocacy into action? Why are you there simply "advocating"??? Nurses do not be fooled by this fancy speech. The dear Minister has clearly said there is nothing he can do but "advocate". This is simply incredulous. VIP must Go! Let someone else do it because clearly you cannot.

So much ministers guilty of such rhetoric, as if they are not the ones in the position to bring about the necessary change.

I indeed read it. Where in there did you see change in pay for the nurses? The agreement will benefit the nurses, how and when? At this stage more information is needed.

This is the exact reason you all will never progress . Too lazy to make to effort to place your anger where it belongs and instead go for the easy Target. That $50M that you are now blaming him for well guess what , There is a person heading the BVIHSA board put there by those very people who made that $50 M to ensure that there is no progress under the VIP and DEFINATELY no reform. So you keep your aim where it is and you will be on here 5 years from now complaining about the same thing.

Many of these nurses are on contract with benefits getting more than when they were in their Country of birth and yet complaining. The BVI is a small Communiity with below 35,000 in population -just a fraction of most Caribbean Islands.
We are happy that you are here, but many are looking to butcher the BVI.

I can say more but Ill lleave that talk for now..

The Health Services needs to start to nurture and recruit locals like years ago. Step up your game , have more Traiming for potentials nurses.Let them be qualified for such positions with a handsome package. as well.

WE NEED MORE LOCAL NURSES IN THE MIX.
Many have left the Territory for because the Health Services has failed them.
    • @ dear health minister. U hate n (21/05/2025, 05:30) Like (9) Dislike (1) Reply
Stop the hate get real, be honest. Nurses, Doctors, Medical professionals period work much harder than police, fire matter a fact all uniform branches. They at time have to do 12 hr shift, double shift and when they suppose to leave at 7 all after 8 they are still there making sure patient are ok. That's how serious they take their responsibility, the other uniform branches as time hit to go home they gone...I was a patient at the hospital, ask me, they pay need to double. What contract has to do with it...

Then surely it’s his job to call the board out not patronize the nurses with platitudes, “I’m a nice guy it’s not my fault vote for me “ have some gonads admit the NHI IS A GOLDEN GOOSE FOR F&F and stop pleading naivety and call a spade a spade!
    • you do you think exposed them? (21/05/2025, 09:02) Like (2) Dislike (0) Reply
wtf are you talking about , he tried to get rid of the guy and you idiot public raised up and fell for the sleight of hand. Who the hell do you think exposed the private greed? It happened when they disingenous sister was trying to use a tradegy to further their agenda. Notice the have not said anything about the operations of the Hospitals since the exposure of the money grab. The fact that you dont know that exactly proves my point at the apathy of the public. Much easier to go for the low hanging fruit.

Hear me again...For 500 time, Nurses Doctor, health professionals need the same immigration status like police, once hired, and passed probation automatic resident status, having them going to immigration every 2 yrs to stand in line not good for me and a lot of people Medical professional work 3 times as hard as police 50% of Police hardly work. Stop the bla bla and make positive things happen..

Working overtime and not being paid for it is extremely hurt wrenching. Please look into the owed overtime payment due to the staff at the hospital including nurses.

This is separate and apart from the salary change. We are losing all our nurses to other countries especially the US and Canada because of the low salary and benefits being offered.

You must also look out for the local nurses, there's not many and they are suffering at the hands of others.

Take a cue from the US Virgin Islanfs, HonourableWheatley:

Starting salaries for nurses: 70 grand
Starting salaries for CNA's: 50 grand

It's not so hard, to offer such remunerations!

NOW, Honourable Wheatley, IS, the time!

      You can't be serious.

The BVI economy cannot in 2025 afford that pay raise of 70 and 50 grand to nurses on the estimated population of 40k (World Factbook).
The USVI population can afford it as of 2025 being that the 2025 estimated population is 104k (World Factbook)

Is it only nurses and doctors alone need better pay what about other health care professionals i am done not going to say the rest
  • Not only nurses (21/05/2025, 12:17) Like (5) Dislike (0) Reply
Not only nurses need better pay that is not fair. All healthcare workers at the BVIHSA needs better pay from the cleaners. Not only nurses keep the organization functional. Without the other staff the BVIHSA would not be able to function so no one department or profession should be singled out.
