NORTH SOUND, Virgin Gorda, VI- “We have ordered a revision of the salary of every public officer. People have to start to be paid what they are worth,” said Premier and Minister of Finance Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) today, February 9, 2021.

Premier Fahie made the declaration during the handover and rededication ceremony of the John E. George Administration Building in North Sound, Virgin Gorda.

“Now I know some listening would say alright what does that have to do with this building? We could get more buildings once we pay people properly. We will have people coming back home because they would realise that their talents and the money they have spent getting a degree is now worth it. It’s going to be asked why do that during COVID-19 when money is tight? But we are a people of faith; you don’t prepare for when it gets better, you prepare to get better,” he added.

The Leader of Government Business said the review would take between six months to a year to get done.

In the meantime, the building, which sustained damages during the 2017 weather events, was renovated by Quality Construction Limited to the tune of $625,400 and was completed in nine months.

The building was rededicated in honour of Mr John E. George, Sr, MBE, who served for many years as the Post Master, Registrar of Births and Deaths, and government agent for the North Sound Community.

According to a press release, the project executed under the Territory’s Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Loan (RRL) was handed over from the Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) to the Deputy Governor.

Building finally here!

“I want to thank the people of Virgin Gorda for your patience. You all take a lot of knockabout over the years for this building, but its finally here,” Premier Fahie said of the building.

Minister for Natural Resources, Labour and Immigration and Ninth District Representative, Honourable Vincent O. Wheatley commented that it was “so fitting that February, which is Black History Month, that we name a building in honour of a local hero, Mr John E. George, MBE.

“Mr George’s life epitomises what service and commitment are to our community. Mr George worked really, really hard,” he said.

Deputy Governor David D. Archer Jr said the late honouree was the father of nine, was well-liked and full of humour and “Anyone that can make someone laugh is always going to be a favourite to everyone around.”

There are a few GOVT employees that have shown their worth during this crisis. However, many have shown how hopeless they are - in fact depts run better with them at home watching tv. A few rises, but mostly big decreases are called for.

Please make sure this passes just direct civil servants. It would be ridiculous of you not to include statutory bodies. Especially with Jobs that are Vitally important to this economy yet you pay them pennies.

Airport and Hospital long overdue for a overhaul.

So much risk yet so little reward...

IF IT DOES, YOUR ADMINISRATION WIIL BE ASSURED OF A LANDSLIDE VICTORY COMING NEXT ELECTION, GOD WILLING. THIS IS WHAT I VIEW AS GOOD LEADERSHIP. Are teachers not public officers? The Hon. Premier said that the study will be done with the aim of paying public officers (which would include teachers in the public school system, and other professionals) what they are worth. This study long over due. The Government is losing qualified persons to the private sector and even to other jurisdictions because of the poor salaries being offered. Persons are getting into debt to become qualified in various disciplines, and are thus being lured outside the public service by reason only of the salary. Government will probably never be able to equal the pay of the private sector but the difference between the two sectors is far too wide resulting in a flight of the best talent away from the public sector. When this happens the Territory as a whole loses.

This all sounds and looks good on paper, but will it mean that the underpaid will be finally recognized and the overpaid reduced to normal incremential levels?

And, at what guage would that be determined?

This could be a form of political retribution where those on the opposition could be skewed, and determined to be much lower than normal!

This needs an independent review body to be truly effective and fair!

So where is this additional moneys coming from for increased salaries.
Seems to me more likely that there is a need to lower the salaries or the amount of Gov emloyees.

How can one even consider the right pay when there s a back log of unpaid increments

I'm talking from ndp admin that keep being promised to be paid. VIP government went in promising to pay those back log and only one was sent. And now you saying you going to pay people according to what they deserve.

If you keep using people and playing with their emotions eventually they will snap.

These politicians fail to understand we working hard to maintain our jobs and now this.

If I find my pay drop I want all my back pay one time that I did not get.

    Note

Before hon fahie ask if we want our increments or our jobs.

    Now this

    Like really

In this time? Look around you, this are hard! This is the time the government should be reducing expenditures by reducing salaries. Salaries are the BVI government expenditure.
