ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Government of the Virgin Islands is inviting tenders for the Supply and Installation of hurricane impact metal shutters and retractable awnings for 16 kiosks at the Market Square, Road Town, Tortola.

The $1.3M remodeled Road Town Market Square opened for business on February 13, 2023, just over two years after ground was broken.

At the opening ceremony, Minister for Communications and Works Honourable Kye M. Rymer (R5) said by the time all works are completed, the project would be in the region of $1.7M.

Hon Rymer had also said, that although not installed yet, each kiosk would have shutters to enclose the kiosks to protect against vandalism and provide adequate security.

Government Information Service (GIS) informed the public on December 20, 2023, that the government was inviting tenders for the shutters and awnings for the kiosks.

Miami Dade County approved shutters!

It said the proposed works comprise of providing all plant, labour, equipment and materials to perform the works and services for procurement of Miami Dade County approved impact metal shutters and installed on the four sides of each kiosk, ensure installation does not affect operations of vendors at the respective kiosks, and the procurement and installation of retractable manual awning on each kiosk.

Procurement Coordinator, Mrs Ishma Rhymer said eligible tenderers are required to submit a valid 2024 Trade Licence for the specific type of work to be tendered, a list of similar projects completed within the last five years, and a work programme and method statement that details the proposed time schedule and methodology for executing the works.

Simple question. Why construct a public facility in a hurricane-prone area without hurricane shutters capability? Was it an oversight, poor planning, rush to get it done for bragging rights, etc. This is an example of Prior Poor Planning Piss Poor Performance. Does government have minimum design standards/criteria for public facilities?

To Bush Professor, Prior poor planning piss poor performance. A stinging blows alliteration which is emblematic of how things are done in tge VI. Our Westminster system of governing needs some tweaking, for it is flawed with Peter Principled, Cowboys, Cowgirls, ROD scholars, etc. The PPPPPP alliteration is an example.

Instead of building a functional local market. these people built a vending plaza more suitable for tourists. Imagine a leader that doesn't understand the difference. They love to travel they should stop and look at local markets in other countries.

Whose idea was this in the first place. One of the reasons the Government is such a failure it is due to the lack of consulting with the people and getting the peoples input. If they had consult with the people or get the peoples input, it would have been a very nice modern indoor all in one market.

When I go to the market is for FOOD, FOOD and FOOD. I don't know why people there want me to buy clothes, shoes and perfume there. We have places that sell this. Calling all farmers to come out in numbers and sell at the market please.

YESSSSSSSSS, All I want to see is food in the market. And I agree, you farmers need to step your game up. Soon the market is going to start looking like a run down third world ghetto market where anyone can set up all the above mentioned. If I want to by perfume or clothes I know where to go.

What about Wind energy? typically a big infrastructure project and the investment is huge but we must think outside the box

is defined as a small temporary structure for marketing purposes. The market square kisosks do not need hurricane shutters. Simply move them to a car park for a large multi story concrete building and lash all the kiosks to the ground in the lee of the building.

Since the money is already wasted the only sensible thing is to try and link the roofs thereby creating some shelter for vendors and customers. In TRUMP world whosoever designed and approved this project would be shot for treason against the taxpayers.

More silliness! Won’t it be best to have the market as an open space, then there is limited damage for the structure. I notice each time tge people cry the politicians jump , fixing this and that to please the people. Though none of it make relative sense. It’s like the speed bumps around the island .foolishness!

Where the farmers market was first / they should of built a 3 story building the ground floor would of been the enclosed market and we would of had 2 stories for government offices and all where those ( kiosks are , could of been some much needed parking spaces for shoppers and governments workers , ( no offence ) I must say that two bloggers made my day , and it's * well jease and wasted money * am still freaking out on master kye shoes and ( wasted money's ~ in Trump world ????
