BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- Dr Wayne Wesley, CEO and Registrar at the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC), has hailed the Virgin Islands (VI) as a trendsetter in electronic transformation in the region.

In April 2017, the Territory partnered with CXC to facilitate students with CXC’s electronic books. It was part of the Ministry of Education’s electronic books programme.

Also in 2018, Director General at the Organisation of the Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Dr Didacus Jules praised the VI’s educational system and encouraged other member states to follow suit.

“After deciding to make CSEC their benchmark exam, they worked with CXC to train their teachers so that they understood the CXC’s methodology and the required pedagogy. Every teacher was provided with a kit for each subject that he was to teach, comprising study guide, syllabus, past papers and all the teachers were trained in the use of Notesmaster as an online learning platform,” Dr Jules said.

Dr Wesley told Grade 11 students of the Elmore Stoutt High School at the New Testament Church of God International Worship Centre in Baugher’s Bay on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 that he participated in a seminar in the OECS countries, and I actually used the BVI as an example as those persons who are making use of the electronic transformation that is about to hit the assessment within the region.”

Region to follow

The new CXC Registrar and CEO said the rest of the Caribbean is expected to do the same in the near future.

“In truth and in fact you are actually pioneers, you are setting the trend, blazing the trail that others will have to follow given what we are doing,” Dr Wesley added.

“It is our intention to actually take this electronic testing to another level but before we do that we need to ensure that all our stakeholders are at the same level with us, travelling with us, doing what needs to be required. Because we realise that there are several infrastructural challenges that we have to overcome for this thing to work perfectly.”

He said, for this reason, they are engaging all stakeholders across the region “in an interactive session with me to let me know precisely what your concerns are so that when I go back to develop the 2021 to 2025 strategic direction for CXC, your input would have been taken into account to ensure that we are addressing your particular need.”

Dr Wesley continues to meet with both public and private schools in Virgin Islands, getting their input for CXC's 25-year strategic plan.

BVI doesn't value CXC. It's a joke to them. They have never honoured the top students nor publish the yearly results statistics. 8 subjects is a lot for them. BVI needs to catch up with the other Caribbean countries.

Thanks to the previous Minister of Education. We have to admit the man really did his best when it came to advancing Education in the British Virgin Islands.

You're doing a great job Dr. Wesley. Let's work together. Forget about what didn't work in the past and get on board gentle people.
