ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has commended the working relationship between his Virgin Islands Party government and His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition.

He was speaking with Acting Director of Communications Mrs Karia J. Christopher on Christmas in the Virgin Islands presented by the government.

Expressing appreciation for the Opposition, Premier Wheatley acknowledged their help during the period of time in the House of Assembly where they worked together, especially while the House was in Committee, to fulfil the recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry (CoI).

Better bills because of Opposition help

Calling their engagement constructive, Dr Wheatley said the contributions from members of the Opposition led to better bills.

“Let me just say that very clearly, the Opposition helped us to get better bills. We utilised the collective knowledge and experience of everyone in the room and we worked as a team,” he stated.

Premier Wheatley added that moving into 2025, the Opposition still has a job to do; ensuring they hold the government accountable.

“[It’s] important to have proper checks and balances in place because of course any government that doesn’t have an Opposition could be guilty of just doing whatever they wanted and persons wouldn’t really know any better,” he said.

The Premier added that the role of the Opposition is very important and he expects them to play that role well on behalf of the people of the Virgin Islands.

“It shouldn’t be for political gain, it should not be to seize power. We should be open, honest, transparent, and we should also make sure we’re working in the best interest of the people [and] not just our personal interest,” said Premier Wheatley.

Indeed, the legislature, the House of Assembly, is where legislation is created; it is where the painstaking legislative sausage making process occurs. It is the habitat of elected members where they are expected to work cooperatively,,collectively and collaboratively to establish laws,,policies, procedures, etc., and build institutions on which social order and justice rests. Nonetheless, the legislature may be province of civic collaboration but the animating force is conflict..The legislature may be war without bloodshed, solving/resolving conflicts without violence.

It is where debate, sometimes endless debating , grandstanding, gaslighting occurs. It is where discussion and decisions making occurs. At the end of the day, politics is about compromise. Debate, discussion, and willingness to compromise should produce legislation(s) in the best interest of the residents.

@E. Leonard , bro, grandstanding , gaslighting, really, etc you went for the worst in politics, bottom dragging. Are you saying that politics is driven by conflict, ie, no conflict no politics? Are you encouraging folks to disagree just for the sake of disagreeing? War without bloodshed? Another license for folks to misbehave, is it not ? You keeping it real?

More times rather than not our Premier is not truthful, but even when he said the truth, in reference to the Topic Issue that headed his speech, many VIP supporters have chosen to disagree against him. Why? Because they hate the truth.

Democracy is a political system that benefit the people it serves more, when the ruling party and the opposition work in unison for the good of all the people, not some.

God is Truth. Truth does tell lies Amen.
