SETTLEMENT, Anegada, VI: Word reaching our newsroom is that from yesterday October 12, 2018, the Captain Auguste George Airport on the sister island of Anegada has been closed.

Reports are that the closure is because the fire tender at the airport is not working and it’s unclear when repairs will be made.

Additionally, there are no night flights for over a year now because it’s reported that the runway lights are not working after being knocked out by Hurricane Irma a year ago.

No comments from BVIAA

The closure of the Anegada airport now means out of the three airports in the Virgin Islands (Tortola, Virgin Gorda, and Anegada), only one is now operational, The Terrence B. Lettsome International Airport at Beef Island.

The Virgin Gorda Taddy Bay Airport has been closed due to a non-working fire truck.

Both Denniston S. Fraser, the BVI Airports Authority Chief and Coy Levons the BVI Airports Authority Director of Operations did not immediately respond to our newsroom queries.

Well that’s not surprising! Yet I know many people would like to fly Anegada for the lobster fest November this year. Without a fire truck it will be irresponsible to have people fly or take off from an Airport that doesn’t have a fire truck... hope my community figure it out soon enough.

The big question is, can any party do better than the ndp?

This is the issue with the BVI. This Government continually focuses on big projects while everything else falls apart. Two out of our three airports are shut down because of fire truck issues (both in the heavily tourism based 9th District). Last time Beef was shut down for hours because their fire truck had to leave to address a fire at Duff's Bottom. Our leaders are flat out blind to everything around them! Airports, sea ports, education, social services, infrastructure (water, electric, sewer, roads, communications), fire, medical, police, these are all the foundation of any community. Without them it does not matter what giant cruise ship dock you have, or how big your runway is, because NO ONE is coming! These key areas must be addressed and must be efficient and well funded. Irma is not an excuse as all of these were awful long before the storm, and now even worse! I weep for my country and am so frustrated by all that is going on!

It needs new management at the BVIAA. They working the staff and equipment to death. All the fire trucks are in need of repairs, control tower operating with old and outdated equipment, terminal leaking.so much more that’s wrong up at the airport.
