ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Some eight persons who sought medical attention at Dr D. Orlando Smith Hospital and were discharged have made the hospital their home, since they reportedly have nowhere else to go.

The amount of persons permanently residing at the hospital is less, compared to 20 in November of 2022.

“We currently have eight (8) long-term patients residing at the Dr D. Orlando Smith Hospital who have been medically discharged but are in need of a suitable living arrangement,” disclosed Marketing and Public Relations Manager of BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) Damion C. Grange on November 3, 2023.

BVIHSA ‘committed’ to addressing situation- Damion C. Grange

Mr Grange said the safety and well-being of these individuals are top priorities, and BHIVSA has been working closely with relevant agencies to ensure that a resolution is reached that provides them with a secure and comfortable living environment.

“These patients face challenges due to a lack of suitable places to live or a lack of necessary care and support at home, which has contributed to their extended stay at the hospital.”

Mr Grange emphasised that BVIHSA remains committed to addressing this situation in a responsible and compassionate manner, and “we will continue to collaborate with the necessary parties to find a suitable solution for these individuals.”

‘Assessment of homelessness’ to be done- Hon Vincent O. Wheatley

Meanwhile, Minister for Health and Social Development Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) has said the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Government will be doing an “assessment of homelessness” and based on the findings then make a decision concerning this issue.

“We are also looking into the issue of affordable housing, the Premier is taking the lead on this,” Hon Wheatley told our newsroom.

What is the main reason for a hospital? Do you really know? If you don't, you are ignorant of its true purpose, and it's functionary goal.

There are, in fact, a number of persons that permanently living in Dr. Orlando Hospital. If not all of them, probably the most of them have not the Spiritual, mental, physical, nor financial ability to help themselves. If they are force to vacate our, not yours nor our care for some only political leaders, hospital, them WE MUST first insure that they will be moved to an adequate place where they will be well taken care of. Anything less is not genuine BVI LOVE.
Genuine BVI LOVE is that, that is motivated by a passion of God', our Creator, engraved LOVE in the minds of all the recipients of its unmatched values recognized by proactive, and active ongoing actions of thoughts, words, and needs that manifest rue human responsibility for each other wellbeing.

You stay there. All of their families live right here and are well financially stable. To make it worst most of their families are benefiting from them being ill and can't pay a visit to say Hi, or here is a bottle of water I bought for you. YES I SAID IT. IT'S SHAMEFUL!!!

Most of these people living in the hospital need to participate in a mental health treatment programme.

If the name of the hospital has changed, when do these people intend to change the name on the outside? Can't anything be done properly and timely in this place?

A deportation of illegal immigrants would freeup plenty well needed living accomadations.
We should l d nt be so lackadaisical about finding suitable homes. Plenty occupancy by illegal immigrants while people are forced to take residency in a hospitaltal room???? What if there is a disaster and hospital space is needed. Prison full apartments full up with illegal immigrants??? Make Sense people. This is urgent and can be readoly mitigated.
