THE BATHS, Virgin Gorda, VI – Police are confirming two unrelated deaths of female tourists while at The Baths last week.

On Tuesday, June 6, 2023, female tourist Diana Wright, 63, of Texas was found unresponsive by members of her family while snorkeling in waters near The Baths around 3:00 PM.

She was transported to shore where attempts were made to resuscitate her by personnel from the Iris O’Neal Clinic and Virgin Islands Search and Rescue. She was later pronounced dead.

Latest death occurred Friday

Around noon on Friday, June 9, 2023, another female tourist, native of California, was snorkeling at the Baths when she began experiencing difficulty. She was transported to shore where attempts were made to restore breathing. She was later pronounced dead.

The name of the second female is being withheld until the next of kin has been notified.

The cause of death in both cases is still to be determined, the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) stated in a press release this morning, Sunday, June 11, 2023.

Investigations are ongoing.

Nit a very nice comment at the moment but it make you wonder ,
Out of pass experience more than once, while being among then on the water, hearing tourist make the statement of take one for a one way ride or let leave my wife / husband behind, while proclaiming love to the person ,and when you make then aware that you heard it then say it was a joke . When hearing of death it send questions to one's mind .

Very likely, the victims experienced an acute event (e.g. heart attack, stroke) that could have happened anywhere. Lifeguard would probably not really have made that much difference. Would they really have authority to keep vacationers out of the water? It’s an assumed risk. That said it highlights again the importance of learning to swim

So sad for the families. A good idea to have a lifeguard on duty. Especially for beaches etc where a lot of tourists and locals alike visit on a daily basis.

There should be a trained lifeguard on duty at all times.

ImIT HAS HAPPENED ALL AROUND THE WORLD ???? , PEOPLE ARE INSURED AND TAKEN ON A VACATION ( THEIR LAST ONE ) TO A TOURIST DESTINATION AND TAKEN OUT . ( AND AM NOT SAYING THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED HERE , OK ,) WHEN PEOPLE'S LIVES ARE LOST WE ALL HAVE TO BE CONCERNED ACCIDENTAL OR OTHERWISE , IF A PERSON IS HELD UNDER WATER UNTILL THEY DIE , THAT IS MURDER , AND IT CAN BE PREMEDITATED OR OTHERWISE / BUT IF NOBODY SEE , IT WOULD GO DOWN AS AN (.ACCIDENTAL DROWNING ) AND IN THE MEANTIME THE (
BATHS ) AND THE COUNTRY IS GOING TO GET SOME BAD PUBLICITY , WHICH WON'T BE GOOD FOR TOURISM / I DONT THINK ANYONE CAN SUE FOR NEGLIGENCE
BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF LIFE GUARDS ???? , ( MY CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILIES , WHETHER ACCIDENTALLY OR OTHERWISE , SADLY ITS A LIFE LOST , SO .WE HAVE YO LOOK AT NIRMT FROM MAN ANGLES , LIKE PREVENTATIVE MEASURES IN PLACE SO THINGS DON'T HAPPEN C OR PEOPLE USING THE VI AS A KILLING FIELD ( WE HAVE TOO MUCH OF IT GOING ON ALREADY ,) NO OFFENCE

It only takes one little sign at any BVI beach that states "Swim at your own risk" and this legal magic excludes the government from all liability for protecting swimmers.

Some future day signs at the various BVI ports of entry will carry the warning "Visit at your own risk" if the BVI's infrastructure continues to crumble.

Majority of the time deaths occur here, the tourists are mostly snorkeling, so what gives! is it their age? is it a current holding them under? does something scare them to death? does something enter their snorkel gear and choke them
    ? i find this freaky !

This is my best friends mother. He is devastated! His 6yo son was extremely close to his Grandma. They were not with her and are in extreme grief. Those inferring insurance money must live very sad lives. They must love money more than their dear family members. I’ll pray for you.
