Youth arrested in USVI for stealing three cheques from 74-year-old woman
CHARLOTTE AMALIE, St Thomas, USVI — A 21-year-old man was arrested on Monday October 17, 2016 at about 4:21 P.M. after stealing three cheques belonging to an elderly woman, who police identified as Ms. Vasquez, [US] Virgin Islands Police Department (V.I.P.D.) Media Specialist Sakeeda Freeman announced on Tuesday October 18, 2016.
The young man, named Malacoy Francis, was charged with forgery and stolen property following a report made by Ms. Vasquez, who made known to Banco Popular that three cheques were stolen from her home.
On the same day that Ms. Vasquez made the report, Mr. Francis visited the bank and attempted to change one of the checks, which was written in the amount of $1,200, according to Ms. Freeman. Mr. Francis had forged the victim’s signature in his attempt to cash the check, according to police.
The Economic Crime Unit was called to investigate the matter at the Banco Popular located in Fort Mylner, according to Ms. Freeman. Ms. Freeman added that Mr. Francis later admitted to police that he had indeed forged Ms. Vasquez’s signature in his attempt to cash the cheque.
Unable to make bail of $10,000, Mr. Francis was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advise-of-rights hearing.
