PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) on Tuesday, October 20, 2020, called on the newly minted youth parliamentarians to utilise their voices to ventilate issues plaguing the territory.

He called on them to embrace their purpose and fulfil it, during the relaunching ceremony for the Virgin Islands Youth Parliament at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium, H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) campus in Paraquita Bay.

“Respect those who have gone on before you, but study them. Study the HL Stoutt, study the RT O’Neal and learn from each one. I want to tell you, you have a voice, this is not just a talk shop, and in your voice you will find your God-given purpose. Utilise it to bring to light issues that are plaguing our society such as crime, drug trafficking, child abuse, domestic violence, the review of the Virgin Islands Constitution and I encourage you to start giving thought to the territory achieving autonomy,” he said.

“The day will come and as I said before the future is coming [so] it is either you prepare to meet the future or the future will prepare for you,” he added.

'Don't be afraid to tackle very serious internal issues'- Opposition Leader

Similar sentiments were echoed by Opposition Leader Honourable Marlon A. Penn (R8).

“I’m really proud that we were able to relaunch this Youth Parliament. I think it is very important that we are going through this process now as we are going through very important discussions now on the review and enhancement of our constitution and our relationship with the United Kingdom, that we continue to build institutions that will function as we move forward as a territory, as a nation.”

He continued saying: “I want to encourage you to not be afraid to tackle the very serious internal issues that this country is facing currently. For one reason, no one is going to vote for you, so you don’t have to worry about a vote right now, so say what you have to say and say it plainly. And secondly, because the country needs to have all voices, all our youths, persons from all walks of life to bring the topics to bare so we as legislators can also listen to the discussions that you bring forward and move forward on a united front on some of the issues.”

He said the Virgin Islands has issues that are affecting our financial services industry, such as Beneficial Ownership and Economic Substance.

“We have issues surrounding gambling and marijuana. We need to ventilate those issues as well, so we can have a heated and honest discussion on those issues, issues about living with COVID-19, how we as a territory is going to live during this COVID-19 period and after COVID-19. What our economy will look like, how do we diversify our economy, we need to have those ideas come forward, and we require you as young aspiring parliamentarians to debate those issues and bringing those issues to the forefront,” Hon Penn pointed out.

During the ceremony yesterday, Mr Kevin S. Fahie was appointed as the Youth Parliament’s Premier and Minister of Finance and the Eighth District Representative.

They have a voice, they must use their voice. But, the thing is, will their voices be head and listened to? Am I the only one that feels this way?

@Orion to train the youths to take up positions in the Legislature when those that are there have passed on/retired. They are preparing them, which is a very good thing. In our society we see that many young persons are going astray, ending up in prison, ending up in the grave.

    Premier,

We also need to see a Juvenile Detention Center as too many youths are committing crimes and have to serve time at Balsam Ghut. The prison is no place for these youngsters to be with older offenders. There has to be a way to rehabilitate these youngsters and Balsam Ghut is NOT the place. Some of them have come from homes where the father is absent and the poor mother cannot handle these youngsters. So the next thing that I am looking to hear about is the Juvenile Detention Center. These young people need help. Just take a look at the many cases involving the youth. I am imploring the Government to make this one of their priorities.

I can’t believe the British Virgin Islands Tourist Board actually have two crazy bats working for them. Sin D show is really for low level can’t think for themselves people. Political science is the art of basically telling the eligible voters, and the soon to expected voters what they are eager to hear. What is Democracy? Democracy is an old system that originated in Greece in the fifth Centary BC. That's over six (6) thousands years ago. The tactics of old are still being used in modern times, where ever democracy is being practiced. The English word democracy derived from two greek words. The word demo means people, and the word crasie or Crasy is translated in English meaning power. Democracy simple means: "People Power." People of all age. Not a hand picked few. The wealth of any country the is governed by a democratic system of government. Is "people Power" being practice in B.V.I? If it is, why are so many of our people are laboring so long for minimum salary. Is the B.V.I really a christian country as many have said? As the saying goes, "nothing tawl go so. Not by knowing this any thing change much, but may our Creator by His power and His graceful, perfect love proctect and help us all.

I know VINO is an objective paper so they will post my comment:
I am not mistaken, Mr Welwyn was the person who founded the idea for this group. It is not because we may not agree with him in many ways, that we should dismiss the work he put in to advance the BVI and its youth in his own way. As a people we are better than this. We should give Mr Walwyn credit for being one of the persons, if not The person who came up with this idea for thr youth Parliament.

We owe ourselves as much; to have integrity in ALL our dealings, not only those that suit our purposes.

Yes, I agree that the youths need to have a greater say in how this country should be run, if they truly know what are best words to say, and best advice to give. The truth is that the whole community rights should be allowed, if what wie will say will be helpful to our betterment. God our Father and Creator, and daily practice of truth, genine love, unity for good, transparency, and accountibily are by far more needed in this community than random speaches made for special intrest purposes in this political unstable, chaotic country.
