KINGSTON, Jamaica, WI- The controversial issues of the Office of the Premier’s sponsorship of the King of Dancehall, superstar Vybz Kartel (born Adidja Azim Palmer), are now cleared up.

Firstly, the malicious lies spread by Rosemary L. Rosan aka ‘Cindy’ in her tabloid, Guavaberry Media, that the Government of the Virgin Islands via the Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) was hosting and ‘squandering more funds on partying’ turned out to be lies.

The truth shall set you fee

Virgin Islands News Online set the record straight in a recent article dated October 4, 2024, with the facts which have now been confirmed by members of YOLO Promotions, including Steve E. Parillon, Tishaun Glasgow aka ‘DJ Taz’ and Craig C. Lloyd aka ‘DJ Mac Milli’.

Yolo Promotions is the host of the Vybz Kartel show set for March 2025.

In keeping with sponsoring events like One VI Music Festival, BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival, Anegada Lobster Festival, Poker Runs, BVI Charter Yachts Boat Shows, A Taste of Virgin Gorda, BVI Wreck Week, Caribbean Baking Awards, and various basketball tournaments, Dr Wheatley has granted YOLO Promotions a sponsorship; however, the Government is not the host or is ‘bringing Vybz Kartel’.

Other misinformation written by Ms Rosan was that the amount given was ‘close to a million dollars’. This again is false, as the Premier granted a sponsorship of two hundred and twenty thousand dollars ($220,000), which is far from a million dollars.

Steve Speaks

Speaking exclusively to Virgin Islands News Online, Mr Parillon, a businessman and schoolteacher, said: “It was a process in getting this show and I have been in the entertainment business for a long time and I have good relationships, which have helped me in locking down this concert.”

Mr Parillon noted that Vybz Kartel is locked in for March 2025 on Tortola and that the concert, which will be held at an outdoor venue, is expected to be “one of the biggest events here in the BVI.”

He noted that feedback has been overwhelming, along with many inbox messages and Facebook shares. Mr Parillon stated that this is going to be a big economic boost for the BVI, since “the BVI is dead and the economy is stagnant”. He urged residents to "come out of your feelings about the Premier."

When asked how this would boost the local economy, Mr Parillon said: “it will mean money for car rentals, flights to the BVI, hotels, barbershops and salons, ferry services... so many benefits out of this concert,” he opined. Parillon noted that Vybz Kartel has a broad appeal and he said he was happy to be able to deliver this big concert for the BVI.

Other countries in the region, like Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados, have already booked the dancehall super star. His first concert is expected to be in his homeland of Jamaica later this year.

$220K of scarce taxpayers dollars sponsoring an unpopular and controversial act. The promoters of this act should bear the cost. How many potholes, road patches , etc could have $220K fixed, repaired. Who will promotion benefit? What is the return on this splurge, not an investment? Further, all of us must be aware of the cost of the spread of misinformation, malinformation, disinformation, etc.

$220,000.00 nearly quarter million dollars that should have been spent helping the people not a “promoter”run his business .
