ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Young people in the Virgin Islands are learning how to live independent lives, learning new skills and preparing themselves to take the reins of leadership in this country one day soon because of the Youth Employment Service. This is according to Education Minister Hon. Myron V. Walwyn.

The Minister made the comments yesterday March 17, 2014 as eight young persons were announced as recipients of the Virgin Islands Emerging Fellows award.

Hon. Walwyn said the Territory’s Youth Employment Services programme, led by the programme’s counsellor, Mr Albert Wheatley, continues to give young people an opportunity to access training and find employment opportunities.

Since the start of this year, he related, 34 young persons have been placed in various jobs thanks to employers such as CITCO BVI, BCQS, OneMart Superstore, Norman Island, Scrub Island Resort, BVI Fire and Rescue Department, CCT Global Communications, Value Mart, BVI Airport Authority, The Dove Restaurant, Penn’s Air-conditioning, the Ministry of Communications and Works and a host of others since the programme started in 2011.

The Education Minister noted that investments in youth development include the finalisation of government’s Youth Policy.

“We anticipate having the policy completed and before the end of the year, have our National Youth Council, which makes provision for a Youth Parliament,” Hon. Walwyn said.

He cited this as an opportunity for young people to have a voice in the development of the Territory.

According to Premier Dr The Hon. D. Orlando Smith, “We must continue to help our youth to effectively use their individual talents and abilities to shape their dreams, so that they in turn could shape the dreams of others.”

Even if ONE person got a job it was well worth it. The others got the necessary training that would be needed for when they do get a job. The Government job is to prepare you for a job and if you lucky you might get one through their program. Their job is NOT to force anybody to give you a job or to just put you in a job, that's where you are wrong.
