THE VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI- Formal expansion to Virgin Gorda, complete with bigger and better infrastructure is on the horizon for the Youth Empowerment Programme (YEP), as the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) celebrates two decades in the Virgin Islands (VI).

During a recent airing of The Big Story on JTV Channel 55 with Cathy O. Richards, and Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly (HoA) Honourable Stacy M. Mather (AL) and Kim Takeuchi of Unite BVI, provided an in-depth update on the progress, funding, and reflected on the impact of the initiative in the Territory.

Reflecting on the journey, Hon. Mather spoke to the numerous collaborative efforts that brought the expansion to reality recalling that while breaking ground in March 2024 was a significant milestone, the project’s focus has extended beyond construction.

“We’ve been making sure the children of Virgin Gorda have something to do while we prepare their future home through arts and crafts, field trips, and opportunities to interact with staff, we’re showing them they’re part of a family. This isn’t just about a building; it’s about bridging the distance between Tortola and Virgin Gorda and uniting the islands through shared experiences and opportunities,” he said.

Funding the vision

Meanwhile, Ms Takeuchi spoke candidly about the fundraising efforts necessary to bring the vision to life.

“We’re close, but we’re still fundraising,” she shared, noting that while basic construction needs are covered, additional funding is required to bring special features to the site, including a basketball court, a robotics classroom, and an entrepreneurship space.

“These are the elements that truly make this facility stand out,” she said adding, “We’re inviting everyone—corporations, individuals, and organisations—to collaborate with us. Every contribution, big or small, helps shape a brighter future for the youth of the BVI.”

Hon. Mather echoed this appeal, highlighting the shared responsibility of the community, “Next year, YEP celebrates 20 years in Tortola, and we want to mark that anniversary with the completion of this project in Virgin Gorda; If you’ve seen the benefits of YEP in your community, this is your chance to extend that impact. Virgin Gorda deserves this, and we can achieve it together.”

He said ‘Yippies’, graduates of the program, can be found anywhere and have gone on to become responsible citizens.

“Police officers will tell you that crime and juvenile issues decrease when programs like YEP are in place. We’ve seen this proven statistically in Tortola, and we’re excited to bring that same change to Virgin Gorda,” Hon Mather explained.

Where will a full size basketball court fit on that small piece of land plus the building. Please be sure you have adequate parking
