'Work for a short time & leave' – Edmund G. Maduro
This was the recommendation put to Premier and Minister of Finance Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) on May 15, 2019 by talk show host Mr Edmund G. Maduro, as he noted the issue of immigration and persons attaining status is an aged old one.
Mr Maduro was a part of a group of concerned citizens who met with Premier Fahie to vent their disapproval with the ‘fast track’ Residency and Belonger status regularisation initiative introduced by the Government of the Virgin Islands.
'Use the Dubai model'
The outspoken Maduro said he served in the position of Chief Immigration Officer for some twenty years and had offered a solution to the immigration situation back in 1986. The solution he said was brought from the Middle East, Dubai.
“We were supposed to say to every worker who comes in here, you could only work so much time, you go back out, you live so much time and you come back so much time.
“You have to protect our children; it is the greatest asset we have,” Mr Maduro argued.
According to our research, one can obtain residency in Dubai if sponsorship by an employer is provided. The Dubai residence visa must be renewed every three years. Another way to obtain residency in Dubai is by purchasing real estate. Once a person obtains residency, he or she will also be allowed to open a bank account in Dubai.
The talk show host, Maduro, told Premier Fahie he was one of the persons who had gotten up on stage during the 2019 general election campaign period and rooted for him and as such he has expectations now that Hon Fahie’s Virgin Islands Party has won.
“Honourable Premier, I got up on the stage and I said vote your party all the way so we want to now get together with you and work all the way. We want to protect our children a thousand years down the road.”
Common ground
Premier Fahie assured he would never do anything to destroy his people or the Territory, "but we must find common ground to unite our people to face what’s ahead. If we do not find common ground we all will regret that we did not sit and find common ground.”
Reiterating that he would never purposely seek to disenfranchise anyone, Premier Fahie said he has met with many other VIslanders, both who were in support and against the regularisation initiative, and he was happy to meet with the concerned persons.
The meeting with Premier Fahie was live streamed on the Government of the Virgin Islands Facebook page.

As a BVIslander, I heard with my own ears (no heresay) how BVI born people talk about island people. Many will be surprised to know who these same BVI born people are. I wonder if any of them can come out now in the open and talk. There are many BVI born people who USES others forgetting that we Caribbean people all come out of Africa on the same boats them but just dropped off on different Caribbean islands. We could well be brothers and sisters!
Edmund never hide who he is.
It sounds, from these blogs, that others are ENVIOUS of the extra privileges that some have. What a thing?
I glad though that Andrew drew a bad card. It shows both sides have VENOM for each other. No place to hide.
