ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A former Chief Immigration Officer has suggested that a process of allowing persons to work in the Virgin Islands (VI) for a short period and then be made to leave the Territory be implemented.

This was the recommendation put to Premier and Minister of Finance Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) on May 15, 2019 by talk show host Mr Edmund G. Maduro, as he noted the issue of immigration and persons attaining status is an aged old one.

Mr Maduro was a part of a group of concerned citizens who met with Premier Fahie to vent their disapproval with the ‘fast track’ Residency and Belonger status regularisation initiative introduced by the Government of the Virgin Islands.

'Use the Dubai model'

The outspoken Maduro said he served in the position of Chief Immigration Officer for some twenty years and had offered a solution to the immigration situation back in 1986. The solution he said was brought from the Middle East, Dubai.

“We were supposed to say to every worker who comes in here, you could only work so much time, you go back out, you live so much time and you come back so much time.

“You have to protect our children; it is the greatest asset we have,” Mr Maduro argued.

According to our research, one can obtain residency in Dubai if sponsorship by an employer is provided. The Dubai residence visa must be renewed every three years. Another way to obtain residency in Dubai is by purchasing real estate. Once a person obtains residency, he or she will also be allowed to open a bank account in Dubai.

The talk show host, Maduro, told Premier Fahie he was one of the persons who had gotten up on stage during the 2019 general election campaign period and rooted for him and as such he has expectations now that Hon Fahie’s Virgin Islands Party has won.

“Honourable Premier, I got up on the stage and I said vote your party all the way so we want to now get together with you and work all the way. We want to protect our children a thousand years down the road.”

Common ground

Premier Fahie assured he would never do anything to destroy his people or the Territory, "but we must find common ground to unite our people to face what’s ahead. If we do not find common ground we all will regret that we did not sit and find common ground.”

Reiterating that he would never purposely seek to disenfranchise anyone, Premier Fahie said he has met with many other VIslanders, both who were in support and against the regularisation initiative, and he was happy to meet with the concerned persons.

The meeting with Premier Fahie was live streamed on the Government of the Virgin Islands Facebook page.

That’s why you do the things that you do Edmond you with your slave mentality treat them like they are a piece of trash when you had enough of them you dispose of them the same thing the U.K. was trying to do with the people of the Caribbean who went to rebuild after world war 2 , but the people who work for you needs to stop and let whatever you have go bottom up that is exactly whT the expats in this country needs to do and send a message that enough advantage is enough .how can people be so ungrateful?

Edmund is worried that if people stay too long, they will interfere with his constitutional right to do laundry for the charter companies! I know that it is difficult to believe, but he did claim that constitutional right a few years ago.

This situation has nothing to do with a slave mentality, it has to do with ensuring the people who can’t go any where else and call it home, can have a job, own a business and survive in their country! We can not go to your country and pick up a rock and own it!

I agree with the five years employment rotation policy. ‘Do they care about the people? Not much of them, Do they care about the culture? Very few, Do they care about financial gain? All’

The level of ignorance being displayed by Mr. Maduro and others like him towards expats who have spent more than half their lives here is truly sad.

they choose to spend their time here, they choose to marry someone from their home country, send the money they earn home , they do not integrate into the BVI but keep their own culture and ways and thats fine but don't then expect to become a Belonger just because you worked and were PAID for the past 15yrs . If people are not integrated into the BVI then they should not be able to become a Belonger just because they have been here for a long time. This is from a white guy with no status in the country. We come here for a years work on a permit that lasts for a year, its year to year

That's GOOD for those who hate island people!!!

As a BVIslander, I heard with my own ears (no heresay) how BVI born people talk about island people. Many will be surprised to know who these same BVI born people are. I wonder if any of them can come out now in the open and talk. There are many BVI born people who USES others forgetting that we Caribbean people all come out of Africa on the same boats them but just dropped off on different Caribbean islands. We could well be brothers and sisters!

Edmund never hide who he is.

This is what I don’t like... who asked for these people to come here? Did they not want to come here? Was it forced to have them come here? If they want to have sex with men/ women for money whose choice is that? Come on, Virgin Islanders go to any other country, we have to abide by the laws that governs that land! Only in the BVI the people who came from else where want to run a country they have no true ties to! Get a grip, we can’t go any where and claim your country rights! This is getting out of hand.... and only when it’s convenient we like to put God in things! Give me a break! You should be happy to return to your homeland, why fight up yourself to stay in a place where the people is no good? It makes no sense! Or maybe you just lack common sense! Geese!

Do anyone realizes how much an Employer will lose if he has to send home workers every 5 years and rehire and retrain workers. Edmund and his antiquated ideas will not work. I often wonder why some of the most prominent locals.. and I won’t call their names but we all know them...why do they keep employing expats in their supermarkets, department stores, financial companies etc? If they hire locals there is no need for expats and BVISLANDERS will be happy right!!! There won’t be any need for residency and Belongership hmmmm
    • @ Expat (17/05/2019, 13:08) Like (1) Dislike (0) Reply
Huh! If the employer hires expat to do a job, it is in his best interest to train the local youngsters to carry on the duties when the expat leaves! All Jobs NEED to be AVAILABLE FOR ThE LOCAL YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN WHO CAN NOT GO ANYWHERE ELSE AND CALL IT HOME! It’s time for us to wake up from this zombie spell these people have us believing in!....

If the US announced no more dual passports....which one would be Kept by the islanders, US or BVI passport?

Well Jack@$$, will the USA discriminate or will that announcement apply to all countries (including UK, Canada, Mexico) and not just BVI?

It sounds, from these blogs, that others are ENVIOUS of the extra privileges that some have. What a thing?

I glad though that Andrew drew a bad card. It shows both sides have VENOM for each other. No place to hide.

What Mr. Edmond is saying about Dubai is very rich and not really interested in having others invest their island on the other hand I can't say the same for the BVI. What's the purpose for people to pay NHI and Social Security if they are only going to benefit 5 years from it? What about investing in expensive apartments and expensive cars when one is going to leave in 5 Years time. One must look at what's best for everyone no body is taking a piece of the BVI when leaving the BVI

Mr. Premier don’t you go decide on something this big alone and make this man mess you up this early in the reign. This needs to be put to a vote
