ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – A man who is said to have mental health issues and is only able to find stability with the application of medication has appeared in the magistrate's court once again on the charge of destroying property.

When Keshaun Johnson appeared in court on October 30, 2012 after being charged, Magistrate Tamia Richards told the court that she had been informed that results were being awaited from his doctor, Ms Samuels, and was willing to release the accused into the custody of a family member once she could be assured that he would be given his medication.

Johnson was arrested after allegedly breaking the windshield of the Virtual Complainant’s (VC’s) car for the third time. The VC happens to be his sibling who lives in the same house with him.

Crown Counsel Leslie-Ann Faulkner represented the Crown in the matter

During the hearing, the VC repeatedly expressed concerns for her safety with the revelation that he would be released to the home that they both share.

Magistrate Richards told the court that Johnson had taken medication while he was incarcerated but this had since worn off. She was further informed that he did not need to be hospitalised but urgently needed to have his medication.

Johnson’s father, who was in attendance, agreed to accept the responsibility of taking the defendant home and also agreed to the terms of his bail conditions. His father told the court that the defendant was working as a stable hand at the time of his arrest.

Magistrate Richards also explained that it was felt by his doctor that Johnson was having emotional issues with the death of his mother and this was driving some of his problems.

Magistrate Richards said Johnson would be placed on $35,000 bail with one surety and his bail conditions included him being taken for his medication by his father at prescribed intervals; his father was to have sole responsibility for him, he was also requested to avoid any and all contact with the VC and also stay away from drugs or alcohol which could affect the effectiveness of the medication he was required to take.

Yea It is a shame how many of our fellow citizens suffers needlessly due to mental illness. Why can't we have the medical place necessary to take care of our people in this condition instead of building an airport?
