Willock hits back @ Hon Walwyn's HoA attack
Firstly, as Chairman of Advance Marketing and Professional Services and as a respectable member of the community, I thank the many callers from all walks of life and even elected Members of the National Democratic Party whose wise counsel I cherish in advising me to “just ignore Myron”.
However, I strongly believe that when the likes of Myron V. Walwyn, who has been abusing our House of Assembly-the People’s House-another important institution under the protection of immunity, to slander and use libelous language against citizens in another failed attempt to go after those he does not like, it is critical that the record and facts be made pubic.
I was only made aware that my good name went in for nomination by the Leader of the Opposition Hon Julian Fraser RA a few days ago to serve on the Public Service Commission as per Sec 91 of the Virgin Islands Constitution.
While I am not a Lawyer, I am told Myron Walwyn is and therefore, he should stop tearing down the legal institutions of the Virgin Islands that have been set up for nation building.
Our constitution plays a critical role in this and offers protection for our people and their rights.
The Leader of the Opposition was well in his rights under the constitution to make a nomination which not one critic could argue with a straight face that his recommendation was not qualified. The said nominee served in the civil service as an Assistant Secretary, Director of Water and Sewerage, (a major Government Department) and as Permanent Secretary in the biggest Ministry in Government- Ministry of Communications and Works. It was a wise decision and Hon Julian Fraser RA and all civil servants should be proud.
The disgraced and failed Minister for Education and Culture's credibility and stewardship of his Ministry require an investigation and audit for many questionable projects, trips and other actions, the most recent being the $1M Elmore Stoutt High School wall while many of our public school children do not even have toilet paper or water to use at their schools and teachers must continue to take funds from their pockets to purchase school supplies.
Willock's issue
The public will recall that in 2010 a newspaper article falsely accused the esteemed Julian Willock of having an employee working for one of his companies without a work permit.
Following the tabloid article, Mr. Willock was sent on paid leave from his Government post of Permanent Secretary, however, the Labour Department had written to reject those claims, stating that Mr. Willock had all work permits for his company.
Willock's good name
Mr. Willock, to protect his good name, took the government of the Virgin Islands to court for their illegal action in sending him on leave even after evidence had showed he had done nothing wrong.
Mr. Willock won in the High Court and was vindicated! Recently the Government, knowing Mr. Willock's case was solid, withdrew an appeal on the matter, despite the ranting of one Cabinet Member in particular, who objected on his usual childish and wicked reasons.
The Court also clearly stated that all Mr. Willock's rights had been violated. Is this the kind of institution, which has no regard for law and order, that Mr. Walwyn wishes to build? Is he serious about building institutions, when all have agreed that since he has gone to our House of Assembly many persons are ashamed of how low this important institution has become? In fact, a well-known National Democratic Party supporter has described this institution as a “circus.” We all know which politician brought it to this point.
Yet again Mr. Walwyn has no credibility on building institutions in the Virgin Islands as it is well known that the constitution clearly required that if elected officials are doing business with central government they need to get clearance from the House of Assembly.
Myron V. Walwyn has no moral standing
The public has been made aware that a company owned by Mr. Walwyn has continued catering for the House of Assembly, even though to date no permission has been sought from the highest law making body in the land!
This is a breach of Section 67 (7) of the Constitution and it continued, as recent as last month.
It clearly shows that Mr. Walwyn does not have the moral or legal standing to be in the House of Assembly due to these blatant violations or his own ineligibility as to what qualifies as a Virgin Islander to serve in the House of Assembly.
Also there is other compelling evidence that came to light in the same institution, the House of Assembly, about companies he owns doing business indirectly with Government Statutory Bodies which can create its own conflict of interest. Is this what he described as building institutions and standards? Give us a break someone! The Public needs to tell Myron Walwyn that there is a difference between building institutions and building himself.
Mr. Willock is proud that after some 15 years of being a model civil servant, serving first as Assistant Secretary, then being promoted to Director of Water and Sewerage then to Permanent Secretary, no one has ever accused him of being corrupt. This is something others cannot say.
No one has ever accused Mr. Willock of conflict of interest and giving himself work or directing work of government resources to his company for personal gain. Others cannot say that.
No one has ever accused Mr. Willock of using his office as Director of Water and Sewerage or Permanent Secretary to waste government funds, take trips all over the world without even a report on those trips or sexual harassment of staff from both genders. I hope others can say the same.
No one has ever accused Mr. Willock of paying $35,045.59 to his own company from the Festival and Fairs Committee while local artistes are owed for almost a year.
I spent some 15 years in Government and no one has ever accused me of bullying my staff or family, firing persons unjustly or even trying to circumvent the wishes of the Public Service Commission on their recommendation even after the Governor had signed off on the appointment to hire in my quest to bring in an expat when there are locals who can do the job. Talk about building institution?
I am proud of my good name that has been reaffirmed time and time again by the courts, the Public Service Commission, Captain of Industries, Religious Leaders, Civil society, regional governments and the good people of the Virgin Islands.
