Wife choker fined $4,000
Quammie, 43, was found guilty of two counts of common assault against Julie Quammie and Peter Grey, one count of damaging property and one count of affray (being involved in a fight). The incidents allegedly occurred in September 2011.
He was fined $1,000 or in default two months in prison for each charge. “$4,000 forthwith,” ordered the Magistrate.
While he eventually walked out the court unshackled, he was locked in the prisoner’s cell at the Magistrate’s Court for a few hours until his fine was paid.
In justifying her fine, the Magistrate told the court she took into consideration the offence took place in public and outside of a police station, that the defendant had followed the virtual complainant to the police station and continued his acts and that police had to intervene to subdue him. “Violence has no place in society,” she told Quammie.
According to court records, Quammie, a resident of Paraquita Bay, was involved in a fight with his wife (Julie Quammie) after going to their child’s school to take the child home.
The court heard that a tug of war ensued between the defendant and his wife over the child’s bag and this evolved into assault. Grey intervened and was also assaulted. The two then left to make a report at the East End Police station but were then followed by the defendant who confronted Grey in the police compound and challenged him to a fight and also threatened to chop off Grey’s head.
Grey reportedly picked up a weapon to defend himself and Quammie was dealt several blows. It was during this time that Grey's sunglasses were reportedly damaged.
