Who is Genevieve Glatsky? Tabloid reporter attacks VINO & HoA Speaker
The article, written in the Thursday, March 21, 2019, issue of the BVI Beacon, entitled ‘Who runs VINO? Willock won’t say,’ attacked Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) and House Speaker, the Esteemed Hon Julian Willock.
Many callers have claimed that the Caucasian reporter, Ms Glatsky is a 'racist' and that the BVI Beacon—some alleged—has a history of racism and racist reporting against local political leaders.
According to one caller who lives abroad, “I know racism when it puts out its ugly head,” however, they have not cited articles when pressed to provide evidence of such at ‘The BVI Beacon’.
Racist reporter?
Ms Glatsky, a novice who started with the tabloid earlier this year, could not be reached for comments as to whether she is a racist and ‘hate black men in power’, as callers and several others alleged.
Her first articled entitled “NDP launches ‘Diego’ in D-7, O’Neal in D-9” was published on the scarcely updated BVI Beacon website on February 7, 2019, and on the website, no other information can be found on Ms Glatsky, her past places of employment, where she is from or why she ended up in the Virgin Islands (VI).
Further, while other BVI Beacon staff are listed, Ms Glatsky does not even appear under the ‘About Us’ section of the Beacon website and research in the Labour Department on Friday, March 22, 2019, shows that she is on a work permit.
In an online blog called The Great Glatsky, penned by Ms Glatsky, in which she describes herself as a ‘Journalist, sass-filled nomad and wing-tipped eyeliner enthusiast,’ she details some past work experience, “I also had some professional letdowns like a job at the Bangkok Post that fell through, and an editor at another publication who behaved inappropriately towards me,” she said in a September 3, 2018, post entitled ‘Thailand Final Reflections’.
“There’s a phenomenon that I've observed, detailed in Foreign Policy, of men who come to Asia to escape the social change of the West for an environment in which the authority of white men is even more unquestioned than it is here. And my experience with someone like that left a bad taste in my mouth. (Not literally, I wouldn’t stoop that low. Literally. Sorry I’ll stop.),” she said.
Meanwhile, in her article, she made ridiculous claims about VINO having no staff and attempted to cast aspersions, that Hon Speaker Willock over the years, was involved in editorial control.
However, Hon Willock has already made it clear—in public statements and interviews—that he relinquished editorial oversight of VINO almost 8 years now, and has reiterated that he is no longer a part of the VINO Editorial team in media interviews since becoming speaker including a recent face to face with JTV’s The Big Story, Cathy O. Richards, in the March 14, 2019, edition of the show.
Gutter journalism?
Further, The BVI Beacon tabloid reporter Ms Glatsky also claimed that Hon Willock in 2010 had people working for him without work permits—at the time, the story written by another accused BVI Beacon racist, Mason Marcus—even though the Labour Department stated that Hon Willock’s parent company, Advance Marketing and Professional Services (AMPS) had all work permits in tack.
Based on the 2010 tabloid article, it said Hon Willock was sent on paid leave, from his civil service post then took the government to court and won and was awarded an undisclosed amount for damages.
The Public Service Commission (PSC) at the time voted unanimously for Mr Willock to be reinstated to his post as Permanent Secretary, however, the National Democratic Party (NDP) government at the time told the governor—according to 2011/2012 records and interviews—they did not wish to work with Mr Willock. In 2012, with no other choice, the then Governor William B. McCleary separated Hon Willock from the service.
Yet, the BVI Beacon tabloid failed to place this information in their news article of March 21, 2019, and also tried to bring discredit against two other news houses, JTV and 284 Media over their interview of Hon Willock and posited questions about what Ms Glatsky believed should have been asked.
Other motives to attack news site?
Our news centre caught up with Hon Willock this morning, Saturday, March 23, 2019, and brought the article to his attention. According to Hon Willock, “I have not had time to read the article, however, I remembered receiving a call from someone at the BVI Beacon as I was stepping into a meeting earlier this week… I asked the person to email me her questions, but I have not received any emails”.
When asked, if he thought Ms Glatsky was a racist as many callers to the VINO news centre had alleged, the Hon Speaker stated, “that is not a matter for me, I don’t know her heart, not sure how your callers came to that conclusion… give me time to read the article for myself”.
Hon Willock noted that he remains an advocate for “free speech, however, the news media has an obligation to be fair and objective.” He further noted, “under the laws of being Speaker, it does not prevent me from participating in business… all it stated is, one must declare their interest and knowing my history of high integrity and transparency, I will declare whatever business interest I have,” he said in an invited comment.
The rookie BVI Beacon reporter, Ms Glatsky, had even spoken to former VINO Editor-in-Chief (EIC) Reuben J. A. Stoby, who worked seven years as EIC of the news agency, and he confirmed he had always enjoyed "full editorial control" and as EIC "always had the final say."
VINO Remains Number 1
Following the Hurricanes of 2017, like other businesses, VINO staff had relocated to working from offshore in countries like Guyana, the United Kingdom (UK) and Jamaica.
At its peak, VINO was the only news house in the VI with some five full-time staff including the Editor-in-Chief, two full-time reporters and a sports reporter, in addition to a freelance reporter on the sister islands.
Additionally, because of VINO’s high output quality, excellent news reputation and professional reporting in the industry, the news organization has worldwide affiliates both locally, regionally and internationally; as many of its articles are used as regional and international references.
Hon Willock, who was labelled “Esteemed’ by Mr Paul A. Peart aka ‘Gadiethz’ in 2014 on his 'Morning Ride' radio show, was never a title made up by Willock, he said when asked about the origins of the nickname. Mr Willock noted that after that, other media houses and social media influencers started calling him “Esteemed”, “I don’t even like it, I am a humble man,” he said before telling us he was busy.
Successful Career
Mr Willock had a successful career in the Civil Service, first being an Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour, before being promoted to the Director of the Water and Sewage Department where he turned around the organization and was raising some 14M in revenues in less than three years according to news reports.
He was further promoted in 2010 to the post of Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communications and Works and was throughout his career, known for his hard work, high integrity and stellar performance.
On March 12, 2019, Hon Willock was elected unanimously by the VI House of Assembly (HoA) as its Speaker. Mr Willock holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Political Science from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

During a media conference on Thursday, Premier Smith was asked whether he thought government had ‘lapses in due diligence’ when they chose to do business with the reportedly defunct airline.
The Premier did not give a straightforward answer. However, he identified two persons – Chairman of the BVI Tourist Board Russell Harrigan, as well a leading personnel in his Ministry – as being part of a delegation that met with BVI Airways then reported back to government." I hope she reading and follow the lead from the former Premier himself.
R****t and maybe s****t too.
Your pen name says it all.
With the US taking the lead, every racist the world over feels embolden to spew his/her racist venom; they are now comfortable with things, with prominent national leaders. If you are Norwegian you are right and tight but if you are Black from S***-hole countries get back. Putting Nazis at the same level as decent people is loco. As it is difficult for a leopard to change its spot, so too it is difficult for a racist pig to change their nasty prejudice hatred. Some pretend to be something that they are not to get along but eventually it slips out. A friend of mine told me that one of the good ole boys he worked with admitted that sometimes the N-word slips out. This indicates that it is used freely behind close doors among birds of the same feather. Further, a nurse friend who worked in a hospital had a patient refused to be tended to by her, a competent Black nurse, saying he preferred to die than to be tended to buy this nurse. Now that is some deep seated hatred. The doctor backed/supported the nurse. Anyone in the VI habouring racist thought should beat feet out of the BVI soonest back into the hole he/she crawled out of. Truth be told not all Caucasians are racist. The ones that are truly not racist are labeled by the racist as N-lovers. Here is a news flash. If you are racist, you are not welcome in the BVI. Catch the ferry, LIAT, Seaborne right away. Bien venidos.
