WEST END, Anegada, VI – Farmers of the Island of Anegada could look forward in the near future to the commencement of a White Sheep project according to Ms Linette Rabsatt, acting Senior Assistant Human Resources Manager in the Ministry of Agriculture.

“The most significant new initiative in Anegada is the development of the VI White Sheep programme which will be a source of quality breeding stock of the BVI’s indigenous sheep,”Ms . Rabsatt told the sizable gathering at the launch of Farmers’ Week activity on the Sister Island yesterday February 10, 2014.

Chief Agricultural Officer Mr Bevin Braithwaite, who read the message of Deputy Premier and Minister for Natural Resources Dr the Honourable Kedrick D. Pickering, quoted him as saying that animal husbandry is of extreme importance to any nation and especially to the Virgin Islands population as the animals are free of pesticides antibiotic residue and growth hormone injection.

He said that when the programme comes on stream there will be quality breeding stock available for sale. “Anegada is ideal for this type of project because of the availability of pasture land and its small human population,” read Braithwaite on behalf of Hon Pickering.

According to Ms Rabsatt work has already commenced on the new holding pen which they hope to complete in the near future. She also alluded to the importance of having youths involved in the various forms of agriculture.

“Agriculture is hard work but the end result brings satisfaction to many with the development of agri-business and on a local level, a healthier population,” she said.

Ninth District Representative the Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal OBE was also present at the Anegada leg of the Farmers’ Week observances. He also alluded to the quality of sheep that are found on the island and encouraged its continuation in addition to other agricultural produce including eggs.

As is customary Hon O’Neal has committed to sponsoring a special prize for a farmer however this time around he has committed to sponsoring two prizes, one for the youngest and the oldest active farmer on the Islands. Honourable J. Alvin Christopher was also present at the activity.

You know what I find appalling year after year the minister who is responsible for the agriculture sector goes to Farmer’s week and echo’s a load of ludicrous and the agriculture sector has not made any significant improvement in the last 15-20 years. One minister took and spent in excess of 5 million for green houses and up to today all they are growing in them are weeds.
If one hundred thousand dollars was allocated to each farmer to ensure they had the necessary resources to be efficient and productive, so much of taxpayer’s monies would not have been wasted I am sure we would have had farmer’s week we can boast upon. What the minister has realized that the farmers and people of these Virgin Islands are immune to the load of ludicrous they have been echoing for years now. They are now prancing on the youths whose sense of direction is not so keen. Hundreds of farmers were before you and other ministers with their agriculture plan and they were ignored or given minimal resources that hindered their success and frustrated them, today the agriculture sector is a disaster. Get serious Mr. MINISTER and cease playing games and assist those hundreds farmers that appeared before you and has been crying out for years and up to today their cries go unheard. Let the youths see that the agriculture sector can be a success and only then we can persuade them to get onboard.
I had dialogue with an associate regarding farmer’s week and his response was down there have more toy, candies and balloon than what fruits, vegetables and ground provision. Mr. MINISTER SIR, this is not encouraging for the farmers and the people of these Virgin Islands, nor the youths.
